LCTA buses kept rolling throughout the storms &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Luzerne County Transportation Authority has taken its share of hits on
this page in the past year. Here's a pat on the back, and it's one that the
authority richly deservesThe LCTA has provided superb service throughout the
snowstorms of the past month. When schools were closing, offices were closing,
whole towns seemed to be closing, the authority's buses lumbered on. The
service stopped only a bare handful of times. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And that's saying a lot. Only one who has been there can know the feeling
of peering down the road, squinting against the snow as you hope against hope
that your bus is still on its way. Did they shut down, and you missed the
announcement on the radio? you think fretfully. Will you have to stay home
from work? (Because there's no way you're going to drive in this mess.) Will
you lose a day's pay? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But then in the distance, it appears: the familiar boxy silhouette, fading
into view through the noiseless white storm. Relief floods over you, and
warmth quickly follows as the bus stops and the driver opens the door. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Deciding whether or not to shut down bus service is an extremely tough
call. The decision-maker must weigh costs and passenger inconveniences against
the very real concerns of safety. None of those items may be figured exactly;
all are matters of judgement, and all such judgements are fraught with risk. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Nevertheless, the authorities at the LCTA have made good calls over these
past few weeks, and the drivers whose skill the authorities trusted have
delivered. We know that bus riders throughout the Wyoming Valley appreciate
it.
