WILKES-BARRE &#8212;The Great American Clean-Up of PA will take place on Saturday, April 25, and the city of Wilkes-Barre will again participate in the annual event. Volunteers are being sought for the initiative that will occur at locations across the city. The cleanup is targeting streets, sidewalks, catch basins, and nuisance properties.&#8220;We are very appreciative of the many volunteers and city residents taking part in the neighborhood spring clean-up each year,&#8221; Mayor Thomas Leighton said in a news release. &#8220;The event continues to have a positive impact on our community and restores pride in our neighborhoods that could not be possible without a strong volunteer commitment.&#8221;250 Wilkes University students have been recruited to clean-up downtown around the school&#8217;s campus. Beyond that, the city plans to find &#8220;Block Captains&#8221; to lead in the street clean-up, which they hope will promote a commitment that will continue past the April Clean-Up day.PennDOT has provided materials such as trash bags and gloves to the city that will be supplied to all volunteer groups and individuals.To register for the event, request clean-up supplies, or volunteer as a Block Captain please contact the Department of Public Works at 570-208-4246.
