Deference to parents on AIDS classes is proper &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At first Jeff Namey seemed ready to sound the charge through the AIDS &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; education minefield. ``I believe that since it (AIDS) is a life-threatening
situation, we have to be really outgoing and deal with this head-on,'' the
deputy superintendent of Wilkes-Barre Area schools said in Monday's Times &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 LeaderCould a call for teaching eighth-graders how to unroll condoms be far
behind? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Well, yes, in fact -- very far behind. Because "I'm not everybody," Namey
continued. "And many people in this community would violently disagree with
me" regarding the need for schools to get graphic about AIDS. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jeff Namey thus displayed an honorable trait that is all too rare these
days: humility. His beliefs conflict with those of many parents in his
district. But rather than insist that he's right and they're wrong, Namey
deferred to the parents out of respect for their beliefs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They trust him with their children for seven hours a day, Namey seemed to
be saying. He won't betray that trust by forcing his views regarding tough
moral issues on the kids in his charge. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And there's more. Namey was not alone. Indeed, he could have been speaking
for several of the local school officials quoted in reporter Anne Karolyi's
story on Monday, "What kids don't know about AIDS could kill them." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 By and large, public schools in and near the Wyoming Valley seem to be
teaching AIDS in line with another uncommon virtue: Restraint. One incident
surfaced of the kind of absurdly casual, impersonal instruction that has made
so many parents around the country mad. A group of high-school students
--trained to teach about AIDS in a non-threatening way -- did, in fact, show a
group of eighth-graders how to unroll a condom. No adults were in the
classroom at the time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But those student instructors "overstepped their bounds," a school-board
member in the district said. And future sessions of the class will feature
both a less provocative approach and a grownup in the room. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Don't misunderstand. Local school officials aren't sticking their heads in
the sand. They're determined to follow both the letter and the spirit of state
law, which requires instruction about AIDS. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But they seem just as determined to respect parents' worries about such
instruction, and not to dismiss the worries as ignorance
