WILKES-BARRE -- The American Red Cross issued an emergency appeal Tuesday
for people of all blood types to donate. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Total blood inventory is 56 percent below last year's level, said Anthony
J. Dombroski, principal blood services officer for the Northeastern
Pennsylvania region. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "This year we didn't see the collections we normally do in the fall,"
Dombroski said. "We are very worried about approaching the holiday season with
inventory levels this low. We desperately need donors to give blood." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Red Cross normally collects at least 350 units of blood a day, but in
October it began to see daily donations drop to about 310. Current predictions
for December are for the daily average to drop into the 200 range. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We collected 154 units on Monday. We need 350 a day," said Red Cross
spokeswoman Nancy Carmon. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 People have been ill or busy with other seasonal activities like shopping
and hunting, Carmon said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Red Cross supplies blood to 41 area hospitals whose patients need blood
in order to live. These people include accident and burn victims, surgery
patients and those afflicted with diseases such as cancer, anemia and
hemophilia. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Most area hospitals haven't had to cancel surgeries and have an adequate
supply for now, officials said Tuesday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We do conduct blood drives every three months," said Mary Ann Grandinetti,
public relations coordinator at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. "We basically
get a good turnout from the employees." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But Carol Williams, chief laboratory technologist at Tyler Memorial
Hospital in Tunkhannock, said doctors there will have to put off non-emergency
surgery and use blood for emergencies only. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We keep a certain amount of blood in stock," Williams said. "If it's
necessary we could probably get enough blood from the (Red Cross)." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Red Cross asks those who have never donated, and are medically
eligible, to give blood. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Donors have to be at least 17 years old, weigh more than 105 pounds and
have not donated blood within the past 56 days. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Collection hours today are 12:15 to 6 p.m. at the blood center in Hanover
Industrial Estates on Middle Road in Hanover Township. Donors can also give
blood from 12:30 to 6 p.m. at 208 Meadow Avenue, Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Thursday's hours are 12:30 to 6 p.m. in Scranton. The Hanover Township
center is closed Thursday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Friday's hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Hanover Township and Scranton.
Hazleton General Hospital, on East Broad Street, will take donations from 9
a.m. until 2:15 p.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
