Justice requires that we make right presumptions &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Last Sunday this newspaper carried a chilling report from the Associated
Press in Los Angeles. It seems that 95 percent of prospective jurors for the
Simpson trial do not understand that an accused person is presumed innocent
until proven guiltyThey were equally unclear that it is the prosecution's duty
to prove an individual's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt -- not the defense's
duty to prove that the accused is innocent. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Let's think about this confusion for a moment. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Those two ideas -- presumed innocence and burden of proof -- form the very
cornerstone of the jury system in the United States. Sticking to both
principles keeps our temples of justice from becoming kangaroo courts and our
search for justice from becoming a witch hunt. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Yet something is terribly wrong -- are people forgetting these sacred
rules? Did they never know them in the first place? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Law Professor Laurie Levenson of Loyola University ventures, "No one stops
to think what it (presumed innocence) means." Peter Arenella, professor of law
at the University of California at Los Angeles, goes a step further by
stating, "Our public education system has never tried to teach people much
about the Bill of Rights and their meaning." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 To these two discouraging remarks, we must add the failure of some parts of
the media -- particularly tabloid newspapers and TV shows -- to observe
old-fashioned principles when they report stories involving crimes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The hearsay, hype and innuendo surrounding sensational cases tend to
distance the viewer from the bedrock principles that have protected
