Airport Gets $200,000 Grant For Road Work

WILKES-BARRE -- President Clinton's new proposal to cut taxes for the
middle class met with mixed reactions around the Wyoming Valley on Friday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It's thumbs down at a local barbershop. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "My customers are not pro-Clinton and they don't see much in his plan,"
said John Kish, as he leaned on his barber chair in Ashley. "They don't feel
that he is offering them such a great deal." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The tax breaks, which Clinton proposed Thursday, include a deduction of up
to $2,000 for putting money into individual retirement accounts. It would also
mean a $500-per-child tax credit for all children under the age of 13 in
households earning up to $75,000 a year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That promise means little to Cathie Evans of Dallas, although she has three
children who would allow her to qualify for the break. She doesn't think the
government will trim spending to pay for the tax cut. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We are just going to wind up paying in some other area if we get this
cut," said Evans, who works at Paine Printing in Dallas. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tony Thomas, the owner of Tony Thomas' Deli and Catering on South Main
Street, disagrees. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I've got grandchildren under 13 and this would be a nice break for their
parents," Thomas said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Stan Madero, a student at Luzerne County Community College, likes a part of
the proposal that would give tax deductions of up to $10,000 a year for
college or graduate school, but is doubtful about Clinton's motive. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "He is just trying to get points with the Republicans," Madero said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Robert Kotch of Plymouth is a Democrat who may switch to the Republican
Party, partly because he doesn't believe that Clinton's proposal will do any
