America welcomes those who come here legally &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 By going public with their anguish over the deportation of 137 illegal
immigrants in Scranton, the immigrants' girlfriends, fiancees and advocates
must hope a public groundswell will lift up the illegals and carry them back
hereThey hope in vain. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And -- with full sympathy and respect for both the immigrants' and their
supporters' plight -- maybe that's for the best. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Because if what federal authorities say is true, the immigrants broke the
law. They sneaked into the United States illegally, in blatant defiance of our
rules and regulations. They stayed here in another act of willful lawbreaking. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And in this age of shirking responsibility, the public is rightly fed up
with the excuses and other rationalizations that people mouth to justify
crime. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They broke the law. Families of bank robbers, white-collar thieves, drunk
drivers and other crooks sometimes try to plea for clemency or understanding,
but they seldom get far. At some point both judges and the public shake their
heads at such claims, and say, "We're sorry, but your son/daughter/relative
should have thought of all that before." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Some will say that illegal immigration is a different or victimless crime.
It's not. Illegal immigration stabs at the very heart of our sovereignty as a
nation. Either we have the right to control our borders, or we don't; either
we can restrict that enviable status called American citizenship, or we must
extend its benefits and privileges to every person on Earth. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 By asking for special treatment for the Scranton illegals, the supporters
are asking for exactly such an extension. They're saying, "All that keeps the
protection of the U.S. government from covering the world's 5 billion is
geography. Anyone who can reach our shores -- and these days, we're just a few
jet rides away from continents as distant as Antarctica -- is welcome to stay
forever." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That's called an open invitation. It's so absurdly unrealistic that no
industrialized country on the planet extends it. Even the United States hasn't
had truly open borders since 1882, when the vast expanse of the West still lay
open for settlement. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
