Local band to donate proceeds to National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

KINGSTON — Wyoming Valley West Superintendent Dave Tosh opened Wednesday’s School Board meeting by announcing partnerships with three of Luzerne County’s institutions of higher education to provide tutoring for students who may require extra work after a long stretch of remote-only learning.

‘The return to in-person learning has offered a welcome opportunity to have tutors and mentors help students,” Tosh said. The district resumed hybrid learning late last month. But tosh and others had voiced concern about students losing ground during the long remote-only months prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

To help overcome that, Tosh said the Middle School “has partnered with Misericordia University to provide much-needed support for the sixth, seventh and eighth grades.” University students majoring in education will tutor students in core subjects beginning Feb. 16.

At the elementary level, the district is partnering with King’s College and Wilkes University “to provide tutoring and mentoring opportunities” for kindergarten through fifth grade district wide. As with Misericordia, the help will be provided by education majors.
