Compassion, understanding will keep the world going for another year &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In response to the choir of fear, hatred and division that has appeared on
street corners, in places of learning and worship, and in the media within the
past year, I offer this letter of hopeTo those who are hungry -- whether for
love, a warm bed, or nourishment: May you find the strength to endure. The
sunrise is reason enough for optimism, and many of your fellow beings will
never lose their capacity for compassion and understanding although both are
reviled by the selfish and ignorant. Belief in oneself will prevail. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To those who quiver in darkness or blame those who are different for your
troubles or find yourselves at the end of the day believing the tirades of the
prejudicial or malefic: Take this sacred time of year for a soul search. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Would the world be a better place without diversity of both body and
spirit? Would we miss George Washington Carver or Jonas Salk? Would our
children evolve as enriched if James Baldwin or Marc Chagall or Albert
Einstein were unknown? A generic humanity would merely exist. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 To those who over the past year have fed a hungry mouth or cuddled an
orphaned child or counseled a wandering soul in need: Thank you. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For it is you who assure us another year of civility and dreams come true. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
