No fog shrouds the evil of shootings at clinics &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Someday, both opponents and defenders of abortion rights will simply and
categorically denounce the shootings at abortion clinics, then have the good
sense to stop thereSomeday, maybe. But not today. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Today, both camps lard their denunciations with so many qualifiers that the
impact is lost. Activists on both sides seem so determined to pull people to
their side of the moral fog that surrounds abortion, they're blinded by an
issue that is not foggy in the least but is perfectly clear. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Here's what we mean. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Read this quote from The Times Leader's story on Tuesday that reported
local reaction to the weekend shootings in Boston and Norfolk. Deni
Thurman-Eyer, director of the Allentown Women's Center (which performs
abortions), said the anti-abortion camp must share the blame for the
shootings, which left two people dead. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "By saying in such a black-and-white, authoritarian, church-supported way
that abortion is murder, they have inflated the issue beyond personal moral
responsibility," Thurman-Eyer said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But "they," meaning people opposed to abortion, have done nothing of the
kind. They have simply stated their belief that abortion is murder. They have
taken a stand on one of the most disputed moral issues of our day, as is their
right. They have done so with the support of various centuries-old religious
traditions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And there is an absolute world of difference between stating a belief and
pulling a trigger. The acts are light-years apart on the moral scale. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In fact, they're so far apart that they shouldn't really be compared. The
Catholic Church did not "cause" the shootings at the abortion clinics, any
more than the civil-rights movement caused the infamous killings of whites
(allegedly by a hate-filled black gunman) on the Long Island Railroad. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In America you are free to state an opinion. You are not free to shoot
someone because your moral code allegedly demands it. There is no fog on that
moral question; there is only a bell-like clarity. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Now, don't think Thurman-Ayer's opponents escape scot-free in this case.
"Some people get so close to the clinics that they can't handle it
emotionally," said Betty Caffrey, president of the Wyoming Valley chapter of
Pennsylvanians for Human Life. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Abortion is ugly. It's horrible ... Just the nearness of it makes them go
off the deep end," Caffrey said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But that's not right, either. The nearness of abortion does not "make"
anyone go off the deep end. Shooting a person is a willful act of immorality:
John C. Salvi Jr., the alleged gunman in the abortion-clinic shootings, cannot
transfer even one ounce of the weight on his shoulders to the bodies of the
victims. He is fully and completely responsible for his actions, assuming what
police say is true. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In fairness to Caffrey, she did take pains to strongly denounce the
shootings. But her effort to get us to understand the shooter's motives
weakened her remarks, because so often in our society, trying to "understand"
the source of evil leads us on tiptoe up to the edge of excusing it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What takes place inside an abortion clinic is a source of endless moral
debate. But there should be no such debate over any violence that takes place
outside the clinic. In the world-views of both the supporters and opponents of
abortion rights, such violence is wrong and should be unambiguously labeled as
such. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
