 Does the recent cross-over of alternative music into the mainstream have
your head spinning? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Looking for an alternative act that incorporates those well-known
contemporary songs into their set-list, but also reaches deeper into the
alternative vaults? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tonight you'll be in luck, when the New Jersey-based Headspins roll into
town for a performance at Market Street Square. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Consisting of Bill Lund, lead vocals, guitar; Steve Paczkowski, bass,
vocals; Rob Muller, guitar, vocals; and Bill Verbist, drums, the Headspins
have been twisting and turning about stages on the East Coast for over two
years; the band's present line-up has been in place for the past seven months. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We've known each other for years," says Paczkowski. "We've all been in
bands together at one point or another. We all just decided to get together
and make our dream band work." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But besides the long-time associations, it's the common thread of a love
for the same types of music that drives the band; that's what brought them
together in the first place. "We're strictly an alternative band," he says.
"We've always listened to the music we play. It's been a natural progression." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Paczkowski says it's the dynamic power of alternative music that appeals to
he and the band. "It's more esoteric than the average rock style," he says.
"It's a conglomeration of every style of music, and then again -- none at all.
It presents more of a challenge. We look like alternative people, we live like
alternative people -- this is our life." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Paczkowski names the late '80s and early '90s English alternative bands as
the group's main influence. "The Smiths, The Cure -- that type of sound has
influenced our original songs." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The group is recording those originals, with the intent of packaging a tape
to sell at shows and shop to labels. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We have five songs currently recorded," says Paczkowski. "Our goal is to
be signed. For now, we're doing our cover shows and having a lot of fun with
it. Hopefully, everyone else is too." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Along with more mainstream alternative acts (how's that for an oxymoron?)
such as U2, Stone Temple Pilots and Jane's Addiction, Paczkowski says The
Headpsins' cover material also focuses on "more outside" bands such as Primus,
Stone Roses, Rage Against The Machine, and Adorable. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The most interesting aspect of this group is the amount of success we've
had by not doing anything we didn't want to do," he says, adding that the band
refuses to succumb to the pressure of performing alternative hits if they
don't like the song. "We've always done things on our own terms. If we don't
like the song, we're not going to do it." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For their live shows, The Headspins pride themselves in their energy, and
performing songs in the same fashion that alternative fans will know and
recognize. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 `It's usually pretty crazy," he says. "We're not Nine Inch Nails, but we
certainly move a lot. It's really animated. We play the songs our way, but
very true to the original version. It's almost like listening to a greatest
hits tape and watching a decent band playing it. It's a lot of fun." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Badlees to be crowned area's favorite &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Badlees, the Central PA all-original act recently voted the most
popular band in Northeast Pennsylvania in The Times Leader's "Sound Choice"
reader's poll, will receive their awards at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11,
at Jitterbugs in Edwardsville. The presentation will occur on stage, just
before their performance at the club that evening. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A birthday fit for a King &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This Sunday, Jan. 8, marks what would have been the 60th birthday of Elvis
Presley. Thousands of fans from around the globe are expected to descend upon
the Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tenn., this weeked to attend the numerous
activities planned in celebration of the life and music of the "King of Rock
'n' Roll." Watch your local TV listings for special programing, and if you're
out in the clubs this weekend enjoying your favorite band, take a moment to
think about the poor boy from Mississippi born only 60 years ago who would
forever change the world of popular music. His contributions are probably the
reason you'll be at that show -- and the reason you're reading this column. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
