 The spirit of popular music has always been exemplified by youth. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And for years in rock, the spirit of nonconformity has always been
exemplified by punk. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tonight at Sea-Sea's in Moosic, traditional hard-core fans will get a shot
of both, as "Shaman," a Wilkes-Barre trio consisting of Dave Hardy, 13, lead
vocals, bass; Mike Garder, 14, guitar; and Pat O'Hara, 13, drums; will perform
as one of five acts at a special all-ages show. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We were about 12 years old when we started," says Hardy of the group's
inception, adding that he and O'Hara, long-time neighbors, have been friends
since age 4. "We met the summer before kindergarten." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But how did they discover punk, a style of music that reached its peak in
popularity before they were even born? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In what seems befitting to the punk tradition, Shaman's story is different
from the norm. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 While many aspiring musicians latch on to an era of music dated before
their time as an influence -- getting turned on to the music by older brothers
and the advent "classic rock" radio format -- it was Hardy's self-discovery of
The Misfits that spurred his musical direction. Originally a fan of heavy
metal, he picked up Metallica's "Garage Days Revisited" which featured a cover
of a Misfits' song. Intrigued by the music, he began to buy the group's albums
and soon became a punk fan. Other groups, such as Black Flack and the Sex
Pistols, soon followed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's free form -- and no rules," says Hardy when asked what appeals to him
the most the music. "Rock 'n' roll is really good music, but it's just
outlived its time. You need something new to get people going." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hardy says the seemingly endless stream of new pop/metal bands in the '80s
-- from Motley Crue to Poison to Warrant -- eventually turned him off from the
music. "So many bands started to sound the same in the '80s," he says. "There
was that glam rock explosion. I wanted something faster, with more energy." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And although punk seems to be making a comeback, the commercial exploits of
the band leading the movement -- Green Day -- don't sit very well with Hardy,
a punk purist. "I think Green Day is a really cool band," he says. "But I
don't think it's cool that they've sold their souls to MTV. It sort of takes
away from the punk ethic --of being against the mainstream." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Since the "punk ethic" also demands individuality, it's no surprise that
this young trio also pen original songs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "When we first started, we weren't that good at picking up songs," he says.
"So we started writing more originals. We felt it was better to play something
you can call your own, rather than taking someone else's music." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Although Hardy says the group sometimes performs covers, those attending
tonight's show will get a 30-minute set of the band's own compositions, which
they've also recorded at Cellar Studios -- a home recording studio in
Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hardy says that despite their young age, their parents generally encourage
their work. "Most of the time, they're supportive," he says "Except when we
run the long distance bill way up. Most bands are from different cities, so
when we're setting up shows, we have to call them a couple of times to see
who's bringing what equipment." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tonight, Hardy says fans will get a "full energy" set of "pure punk" with
"no talking between the songs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I like the energy from the crowd," he says. "It gets you really psyched up
when you get the crowd slamin'. The whole show environment is cool. Nobody
cares what you dress like or what you act like. You just get to be your own
person." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
