As predicted, the first major snowstorm of the season arrived early
Saturday and blanketed the area. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 While no challenger to record storms of the past, Saturday's snowfall was
substantial in some places. As of 4 p.m. Saturday, about 7 inches of snow had
fallen in Wilkes-Barre, the National Weather Service reported. Weather Service
forecasts for today call for continued snow and a temperature near 15 degrees. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Though the snow caused the usual problems for many area motorists, children
were out Saturday taking advantage of the weather. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's our duty as kids to have fun," said Michael Kelly, 11, of North Main
Street in Wilkes-Barre. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Despite the snow, some area college students found a way to have fun and
raise money for charity at the same time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We've been up all night," said Rochel Perretti, who along with about 40
other Penn State Wilkes-Barre students paid $5 to participate in a
Fling-A-Thon at the gym on the Lehman Township campus. Students played games
such as twister, basketball and wallyball and participated in many other
activities from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday and exceeded the $500 they
needed to sponsor a couple who will participate in the JFC/Panhellic Dance
Marathon in State College. Proceeds from the dance marathon, which will be
Feb. 17-19, will benefit children with cancer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The snow did not keep everyone indoors. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We have some traffic but not real heavy," said Nancy Mitchell, a toll
collector at the Wilkes-Barre interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. She
added that roads were in pretty good condition in our area."Down south there
were some accidents, but there were none up here." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 State police at the Wyoming and Hazleton barracks said there had been
relatively few accidents and most people seemed to be heeding warnings to stay
off the roads. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Many area retail stores closed early Saturday, including ones at the
Wyoming Valley Mall in Wilkes-Barre Township. Sears and JCPenny did not open,
and many of the stores closed early, said Chuck Balko, general manager of the
mall. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 However, not all stores were adversely affected by the inclement
conditions. Valley Power Equipment on Route 309 in Wilkes-Barre Township had a
last-minute rush for snowblowers and stayed open later than usual. Chris
Roberts, seasonal department manager at Sugerman's in the East End Centre,
Wilkes-Barre Township, said that store also had a good day selling snow
shovels and rock salt. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
