PLYMOUTH -- By beating Bishop Hoban 126-60, the Wyoming Valley West girls
swim team proved Friday that the gulf between the best and second-best teams
in the Wyoming Valley Conference is wide and deep. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Spartans dominated the Argents thoroughly -- taking firsts in 11 of 12
events. Valley West took first and second in two events, and finished 1-2-3 in
the 500-yard freestyle. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Valley West improved to 12-0 and is all alone in first place in the WVC.
The Spartans can clinch their fourth straight league title by defeating
Scranton Wednesday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hoban, which also entered the meet undefeated, fell to 11-1 and will finish
best-of-the-rest for the fourth straight year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Leadership is the key to the team, and the seniors are certainly leaders,"
Valley West coach Nina Leigh Wozniak said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Among the seniors of the day were Melissa Sandsbury (200 individual medley,
100 breaststroke), Karen Krysiewski (and &amp; 200 freestyle), and Kristin
Stretanski (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Other seniors with key victories for Wyoming Valley West included Carolyn
Chipego (500 freestyle), and Gina Resciniti (diving). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Resciniti scored an impressive 200.30 on six dives. Her best effort came on
a back dive from a straight position with a degree of difficulty of 1.7 that
earned 6, 7, 7 (out of a possible 10) from the judges. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After the win the Spartan swimmers threw Wozniak into the pool in the
spirit of celebration. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The adrenaline was up for me too," added a dripping wet Wozniak. "I feel
like I swam every event." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The highlight race of the day came in the 100 breaststroke when Sandsbury
overtook Hoban's Beth Dourand on the final turn to get the win. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I felt slow in the first 50 yards, (and) on my (last) turn I knew she was
right with me. I knew I had to give it my all," Sandsbury said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One reason for the overwhelming success of the Spartans was the way Wozniak
arranged her team's lineup. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wozniak put Krysiewski in to swim the 100 freestyle, instead of Stretanski
(the strongest performer in that event). The move paid off as Krysiewski won
the event. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Then Wozniak and put Chipego in the 500 freestyle (Krysiewski's strongest
event), because she knew that Chipego, or Raina Motyka, or Chrissy Chipego --
the top three finishers in the 500 freestyle -- could beat the Argents fastest
time just as well as Krysiewski. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 By doing this Stretanski stayed fresh to swim in the 100 backstroke. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Coach put together an awesome lineup," Krysiewski said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bishop Hoban's best finish of the meet came when Brianne McCarty and Katie
Yankovich finished 1-2 in the 100 butterfly. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Brianne had three lifetime bests today. She really rose to the occasion
and did the job for us," Bishop Hoban coach Mara Pawlenok said. "She gave us
our only first, and that felt good." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As the crowd dispersed after the meet, murmurs could be heard decrying this
Spartan team, "the best Wyoming Valley West girls swim team ever." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
