`Respect for the rights of others' was sign's implied message &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Reading, even for a Times Leader senior vice-president and editor, is
becoming a lost art. You are what is good and bad in many AmericansI am very
sorry for your inconvenience ("Charity begins at your parking lot,"Dec. 24).
But your situation had nothing to do with the holiday season, charity or the
Salvation Army. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Respect for personal property, individuals' rights and protecting one's own
property are what that chain was about. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We live in a society where a few people believe everything is theirs until
proven otherwise. Where you can say anything about someone else, whether it is
true or not. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Fences, chains, barriers make for good neighbors. It is a shame that this
is so, but when you don't respect other people's property and individual
rights, such situations occur. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Don't blame the Salvation Army. Look within yourself. Read your column
again. Who should you blame for your situation? Remember, a little extra time
to read the sign would have saved you all that grief and aggravation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The last three paragraphs of your commentary try to make up for all that
preceded. It just didn't make it for me. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We all should be a little more considerate of other people's feelings,
property, religion, race and, most of all, the individual. If we all took a
little more time to care and extra time to read, this world would be a better
place for all of us. Remember, being a better neighbor begins with each of us.
It is how we act and what we teach our children. It really reflects who we are
as a person and as a society. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
