`Guru' says Lions land some of best &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Phil Grosz has been consumed by this thing called college football
recruiting since 1984, which pretty much explains why Penn State fans hang on
his every word around this time of yearWhy, even legendary coach Joe Paterno
refers to Grosz as "The Guru," though Phil knows better than to take that as a
term of endearment. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; That's because Paterno, probably more than anybody in his profession, has a
rather robust disregard for those who devote their time to the big business of
college recruiting. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The coach, I'll bet, would sooner agree to having Jackie Sherrill's
initials tattooed on his behind rather than admitting guys like Grosz know
what they're talking about. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Yet some of them do. Particularly Phil. Which is why college football beat
writers from all across the land jammed the phone lines at Blue-White
Illustrated the last couple of days wanting to chat with Grosz, whose G&amp;W
Recruiting Report is as coveted by dyed-in-the-wool Nittany Lion followers as
a ticket to Beaver Stadium in the fall. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Now people take it almost as seriously as football itself," Grosz said
Tuesday morning, the day before high school prospects can put their big
decisions in writing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I can't tell you how many people have called." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A serious football fan himself, Grosz rates the current crop of incoming
freshmen among the best ever at Penn State. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Right now I'm ranking them second in the country," said Grosz, the
owner/publisher of BWI, a publication devoted to Penn State sports. "Overall
though, Ohio State has the best class." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Headlining the list of players expected to formally commit to Penn State
today are Courtney Brown, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound linebacker/end from Moncks
Corner, S.C.; Joe Dawkins, a 5-10, 185-pound running back/defensive back from
Hackensack, N.J.; Rashard Casey, a 6-3, 190-pound quarterback from Hoboken,
N.J.; and Titcus Pettigrew, a 6-2, 194-pound wide receiver from Clemmons, N.C. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Brown is rated the top defensive player in the country. A Parade and USA
Today first-team defensive selection, the South Carolina Player of the Year
ran the 40-yard dash in an eye-popping 4.52 seconds at Penn State's summer
camp last year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dawkins, a second-team selection by both Parade and USA Today, has been
clocked in the 40 at 4.3. He set the New Jersey high school record in the
100-meter dash with a time of 10.31. The old mark belonged to a guy by the
name of Carl Lewis. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Casey, a Parade and USA Today second-teamer, is the No. 2-rated passer in
the country. He's been timed at 4.5 in the 40. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pettigrew, an All-USA Today first-teamer as well as North Carolina's
Gatorade Player of the Year, covers the 40 in 4.4. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And Grosz said if Norristown speedster Daymon Carroll (5-11, 182 RB/DB)
joins the fold today, the Lions will have acquired the two fastest players
(Dawkins being the other) in the country. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Penn State is also expected to pick up some size from the '96 class.
Philadelphia's Imani Bell (6-4, 290), from Cardinal Dougherty High School,
looks like the best of the bunch. He is the son of NFL Hall of Famer Bobby
Bell. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And Pleasant Valley (Pa.) High School's John Blick (6-7, 310) is rated the
top offensive line prospect in the Northeast. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The defining character of this team is speed," said Grosz, noting that 11
of the incoming players run a 4.5 or better in the 40. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After Ohio State and Penn State, "The Guru" rounds out his top 10 this way:
Southern Cal, Tennessee, Florida State, LSU, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Michigan
and Colorado. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Not surprisingly, the Buckeyes and Lions sit atop Grosz's Big Ten
recruiting class, followed by Michigan, Illinois, Michigan State, Wisconsin,
Northwestern, Indiana, Iowa, Purdue and Minnesota. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 According to Grosz, Ohio State rated the slight edge over Penn State
because the Buckeyes picked up the nation's best running back class, did
extremely well in their home state, lured one of the country's three best QBs
to Columbus and landed the top two players from Canada. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Penn State may have more star players," Grosz said, "but Ohio is better
overall from top to bottom." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Still, this is one instance where second-best may be good enough. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
