As precocious and possessed youngsters in Showcase Theatre's production of
`The Innocents,' Kathleen Moran of Laflin and Anthony Yenason of Dallas,
seated, cause untold heartache for their housekeeper and governess, who are
portrayed by Joan Johnson of Forty Fort and Diane Yenason of Dallas &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Times Leader Social Editor &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Imagine yourself as an 1880s English governess, thrust into a lonely
mansion with two eerily different children, a housekeeper in denial and a pair
of salacious specters for company. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 You'd probably descend into madness, too, just as poor Miss Giddens seems
to in Showcase Theatre's upcoming production of William Archibald's "The
Innocents." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I think after it was all over, she'd probably kill herself," says Diane
Sheman Yenason of Dallas. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As the production's beleaguered governess, Yenason shares some intense
scenes with her 12-year-old son, Anthony, who portrays one of the two
precocious yet possessed youngsters in her charge. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "My mom is more powerful in real life," Anthony says, sipping a chocolate
milkshake during a recent rehearsal break. "And Miles is more cocky than I
am." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Thus reassured that the actors haven't been typecast, let's examine the
characters. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Miles is arrogant yet overly polite ... and just why was he expelled from
boarding school? Little sister Flora yaks incessantly, plays morose dirges on
the piano and mockingly calls her teacher "Miss Giddens, Dear." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 With malevolent ghosts peering and reappearing and a housekeeper more
equipped to serve tea than sympathy, what's a governess to do ... attempt an
exorcism, perhaps? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Director Joe Kelly of Kingston describes "The Innocents" as a psychological
ghost story with sexual overtones, based on Henry James' story "The Turn of
the Screw." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The children are possessed by an unspeakable evil," he says. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And when the youngest cast members are in character, the casual observer is
likely to feel spooked. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Before a recent rehearsal, Anthony and 10-year-old Kathleen Moran offered
assurance that the play is not really that scary. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But as the evening progressed, Anthony admitted with a giggle, "I freaked
myself out." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If you freak out easily, don't come alone. Bring a friend you can trust to
hold your hand. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
