WILKES-BARRE -- Some local thieves must be fervently preparing to deal with
the scorching summer heat. Big time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If it seemed a little warm in the Odyssey Total Fitness Center tennis
courts the past few days, it's probably because a 5-ton air condensing unit
was stolen sometime during the weekend. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; That's a hefty load to bear, even for the most ardent thief. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In two incidents this past weekend, the air condensing unit and $3,600
worth of Freon were stolen in Wilkes-Barre, police said. The unit uses Freon
but it is not known if the thefts are related. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The unit is only 3-feet-by-3-feet but Wilkes-Barre police and Gregory
Banks, general manager of Odyssey Total Fitness Center, are wondering why and
how it was stolen. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Peter McMonigle, membership coordinator at Odyssey, said the thieves were
pretty clever in stealing the outdoor portion of the air conditioning
equipment. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "They used tools to remove the unit," McMonigle said. "They knew it was
there and knew how to remove it so someone else could use it or sell it. They
needed some heavy equipment or some pretty big guys to take it." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The thief or thieves seem to have known exactly what they were doing.
Police said that two copper pipes, one plastic pipe and electrical wires were
cut to remove the unit. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Banks told police Monday afternoon that the "Cleveland" model ACP-501A
five-ton A/C central air condensing unit from the east side of the Odyssey
complex had been stolen. The unit was used to cool the indoor tennis courts. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the laugh is on the perpetrator, said Banks, because the unit is
worthless without the other part of the system, located inside the building. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It was a split system," Banks said. "The coils used to cool the air are on
the inside of the building." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wilkes-Barre Police Sgt. John Curham said the theft was turned over to
Wilkes-Barre police detectives for investigation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But what's an air condenser without Freon, the trademark chemical used in
most air conditioners? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Richard Love of Love's Thermal Systems Inc., 29 E. North St., Wilkes-Barre,
told Wilkes-Barre police that sometime between 3 p.m. Saturday and 7:25 p.m.
Monday, someone entered his business and removed $3,610 worth of Freon. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Reported stolen was five 30-pound canisters of Freon 502, valued at $1,788;
four 30-pound canisters of Freon 12, valued at $1,771; and one 30-pound
canister of Freon 22, valued at $51. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
