All out, all the time &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Even when the starting lineup did not include his name, David Tokheim never
stopped playing with his heartHe came to the park early for extra batting
practice each day, which is exactly what he did during an All-Star season for
the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons last year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He ran as hard as he could when his swings in the game produced nothing
more than routine grounders, even when he knew the hustle would probably not
get him anything other than an out. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He caught everything hit his way as a late-inning defensive replacement in
the outfield. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "That's the type of player I am," Tokheim said Wednesday, after a three-hit
performance during which he became involved with every Red Barons run in a 4-2
victory. "I'm going to have the same approach if I'm hitting .300 or .200." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He is much better than .224, where his batting average now stands after a
1-for-5 day in Charlotte Thursday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tokheim was a late addition to the 1995 Triple-A All-Star Game when he
showed up at Lackawanna County Stadium, where last year's event was held, and
found the National League team needed a quick replacement. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But that he made that team shouldn't have been by accident. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tokheim produced seperate hitting streaks of eight, nine, 10 and 11 games
during various stretches of 1995, and had one marvelous streak where he set a
Red Barons record by driving in at least one run for eight consecutive games. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He finished third in the International League with eight triples, raised
his minor league batting average to .283 and made a number of wonderful
defensive plays in the outfield. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That success has been hard for Tokheim to find this season, in what is
turning into the most challenging professional baseball year for the likeable
26-year-old California native and Florida resident. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But that wouldn't be detectable from Tokheim's hustle, which remains as
all-out today as it was when he was batting .301 for Class AA Reading in the
Eastern League in 1994. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'm going to come out and work hard and do what it takes to get better
each day," Tokheim said. "I'm not going to change my approach. I'm always
going to be concerned about having a good approach." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Nobody is doubting that. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But physically, Tokheim has had problems adjusting to his new role on the
bench. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A starter throughout his five-year minor league career, Tokheim suddenly
found himself replaced in the Red Barons outfield by guys like Ruben Amaro and
J.R. Phillips, who the parent Phillies wanted playing regularly at
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "For one, I had to play Amaro and Phillips all the time," Aviles said. "All
I can do is flip-flop in the outfield." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Over the past few weeks, Philadelphia's orders left guys like Bob Zupcic
and Rob Butler and Jon Zuber and Tokheim fighting for basically one outfield
spot. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It did not sit well with "Tok." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "That's not up to me," Tokheim said. "It sure helps playing as often as
possible." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It looks like he may get more of a shot now. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Phillies called up Phillips Monday, and Tokheim played in all three of
the Barons' games against Charlotte. He responded by hitting safely in all
three. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Against American League affiliates, when the DH is used in minor league
play, Tokheim could find even more opportunity to polish his stroke. Not that
he ever has, or will, stop trying. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "He always keeps himself ready and he always works hard," Aviles said. "It
always pays off for him." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
