WILKES-BARRE -- Local leaders want to make dropping the ball a good thing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For years, city leaders failed to follow up plans to promote the city and
its downtown, said Mayor Tom McGroarty. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; So the mayor's new Downtown Task Force came up with several promotional
ideas, including a New Year's Eve celebration on Public Square featuring a New
York City-style ball dropping. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We're going to pull it off," McGroarty said Wednesday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The group wants downtown hotels and restaurants to hold parties during the
event. It will solicit vendors to serve refreshments and sponsors to pay for
costs associated with it, McGroarty said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 An idea suggested during this week's task force's meeting was to have the
lighted ball drop from either PNC Bank or Mellon Bank's buildings -- the two
tallest on Public Square. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "But we'll go with whoever's the biggest sponsor," McGroarty said. "That's
a good way to do it, isn't it?" &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The task force discussed other ways to tout the city, McGroarty said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It plans to approach the Federal Communications Commission for a license to
operate a low frequency transmitter that would beam a radio signal advertising
city events. A posted sign would tell drivers entering the city where to tune
for the information, McGroarty said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The task force also is seeking a sponsor to help pay for a lighted message
board it would post along Interstate 81. The sign also would inform guests and
residents of coming events, the mayor said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 McGroarty said Bon-Ton Department Stores helped make the city's annual
fireworks display at Kirby Park even better this year by donating $10,000
toward the event. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's not any one thing that's going to bring this downtown back,"
McGroarty said. "It's a collection of 100 things like this." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
