WILKES-BARRE TWP. -- The Wyoming Valley West baseball team advanced further
than any Wyoming Valley Conference squad in the last 15 years, finishing
second in the PIAA Class AAA tournament less than two weeks ago. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One advantage for the four Spartans playing in Sunday's eighth annual WVC
Senior All-Star Classic at Monarch Fields was they had been competing right up
to the game. For most of the other players in the all-star game, there were
signs of rustiness. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The foursome of Kevin Miller, Pat Storz, Mike Stevenson and Charlie Goff
helped the AAA stars to a big lead early before Hanover Area pitcher Joe Doran
cut off a AA rally in the late innings in a 13-10 AAA victory. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Miller, a senior left-hander who was 3-0 during WVW's state playoff run,
struck out six batters in two innings. At the plate, he had two hits, scored
twice and drove in two runs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Storz added a sacrifice fly and a two-run double. Stevenson had a
bases-loaded triple in a six-run sixth inning for the AAA stars. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "You expect that," AA coach Steve Bennett of Seton Catholic said of the
Spartans' performances. "They didn't get to the state championship game by
accident." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Doran came on in relief in the seventh inning after the AA stars scored
five times to cut the AAA lead to 11-10. He struck out four over the next 2
innings to pick up the save. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "They've been playing on a regular basis," AAA manager Tom Kiewlak of
Nanticoke added about the Spartan quartet. "They've seen batting practice and
pitching regularly. It showed the way they swung the bats (Sunday)." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Despite pounding out 16 hits, the AAA stars were in a dogfight until the
last inning. The AA stars had just four singles, but took advantage of eight
walks and a couple of errors to stay close. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The AAA stars took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against AA starting
pitcher Cory Fountain of Meyers. Dallas' Jeff Kunkle singled and Miller
tripled to right for the first run. Storz followed with a sacrifice fly. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The AA squad scored three runs without a hit in the top of the third to
take its only lead of the game. GAR's Barry Hicks, Bishop Hoban's Ron
Tribendis and Meyers' Keith Zwiebel walked against Coughlin's Kevin Schaffer.
Bishop Hoban's Brian Rogers had an RBI grounder and Lake-Lehman's Mike
Adamshick saw his grounder booted to chase home Tribendis and Zwiebel. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "These games usually are high scoring," Bennett added. "With these kids,
it's tough making out a lineup. But everybody has fun." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The AAA stars took a 4-3 lead in the home third when Nanticoke's Pete Blasi
and Kunkle singled to start. One out later, Storz doubled to left-center field
to score both runners. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hicks walked and scored on an infield error as the AA stars tied the game
at 5-5 in the top of the fifth. However, the AAA team scored six runs in the
bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 An error, a bloop single and a walk loaded the bases against Seton
Catholic's Al Zangardi. Stevenson followed with a booming triple to center to
score all three runs. Miller singled in Stevenson one out later. Pittston
Area's Jason Tribbet added a run-scoring single to cap the rally. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "This is always a great showcase for all of the talent in the Wyoming
Valley Conference," Kiewlak added. "And it gives the kids a chance to play
with kids they've gone against for the last three years." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The AA squad got its first hit in the sixth when GAR's Jason Allen beat out
a grounder to short to score Lake-Lehman's Tom Fostock, who had walked and
advanced on a wild pitch and a grounder. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Chris Harkins and Steve Unger had RBI singles in the eighth inning for the
AAA stars. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
