 You have an appointment on July 22. It's at the Kingston Senior Center from &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 1:30-3:30 p.m., and your presence just might have some impact on the future
of our state and the quality of your lifeThe state Department of Aging is
holding a series of hearings across the state to inform citizens of
Pennsylvania's strategy over the next three years in meeting the complex needs
of an aged and rapidly aging population. The hearings are set up to get
feedback from Pennsylvania's citizens. If you're 30 or 50 or 70 years old,
what is said and done in this state, in this nation, to address the needs of
our elderly population is going to have an impact on your well-being, your
wallet, and your future. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Last Sunday, the New York Times' Money and Business section painted several
decidedly grim scenarios on how this nation is going to meet the needs of a
huge population of baby boomers now wending their way toward retirement and
old age. Who is going to pay for those vast numbers of citizens, over half of
whom will not have sufficient savings or pensions, to meet the daily costs of
living and the escalating costs of geriatric health care? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Our children and grandchildren? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The elderly who saved and invested for their own retirements? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Government? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And what happens to the national budget? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 While there are a number of possible approaches and combinations thereof to
handling this fast-approaching dilemma, none is ideal; all are costly; and in
each plan someone gets hurt financially. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We can only congratulate Gov. Ridge and the Department of Aging for
attacking the problem right now -- and for giving us a chance to have our say. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Go to the meeting, listen to how the state plans to meet the needs of the
elderly, to deal with the costs of long-term care, and to make prescription
medicines affordable for ailing, older Pennsylvanians. Share your concerns,
state your preferences, ask questions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Go for your parents' sake, your children's sake, your pocketbook's sake. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
