Steamtown Marathon gets SOARly needed boost &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If you heard that Scranton's Steamtown Marathon was dead before it even
gave birth, hold everything! &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Keep that Oct. 13 date open, because the race has been savedDuring two
hectic weeks in June, the marathon unexpectedly lost its major sponsor and
beneficiary, but found enough new sponsorship money through the fund-raising
efforts of the Scranton Organized Area Runners marathon committee to keep the
race alive. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Scranton Cultural Center pulled out of the marathon after Colin
Bissett, the center's driving force behind the race, resigned June 13 as the
arts organization's executive director. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We needed to raise $25,000, and we gave ourselves two weeks to do it,"
SOAR president Bill King said, "so we picked up the phones and started calling
businesses that we thought would support us. We had spent too much time on
this project to give up on it." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 King complimented the Cultural Center's organizational assistance during
the transition. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On June 25, SOAR members announced they had raised enough money to save the
marathon, which they hope will be a long-term annual event. SOAR also
announced that St. Joseph's Center, in Dunmore, a residence for neurologically
impaired, multiply handicapped, medically fragile children, will receive the
proceeds from the event. St. Joseph's also has received proceeds from the
Irish Heritage Games, at Harveys Lake, for 17 years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The following businesses and organizations have signed on as sponsors of
the Scranton marathon: National Sporting Goods, The Scranton Times, WNEP-TV,
The Mall at Steamtown, Viewmont Mall, PG Energy, Lind Enterprises, PNC Bank,
Pennsylvania Northeast Territory Visitors Bureau, state Rep. Frank Serafini,
Pioneer American Bank, Jerry's Sport Center, CECO Associates, First National
Bank of Jermyn, DeNaples Transportation, Pennsylvania American Water Co. and
Penn Security Trust. SOAR also is contributing financially to the event. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 SOAR members also have been attending council meetings throughout
Lackawanna County asking for assistance in traffic control from the various
communities that will be part of the 26.2-mile course. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The mayors and council members from communities along the route have been
unanimous with their support," King said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The race will start at Forest City High School and finish near the entrance
to the Steamtown National Historic Site in downtown Scranton. Originally, the
course was to go through 13 communities: Forest City, Vandling, Simpson,
Carbondale, Childs, Mayfield, Jermyn, Archbald, Peckville, Blakely, Dickson
City, Dunmore and Scranton. Now two more communities, Olyphant and Jessup,
have been added to the route. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 King said the marathon will lend itself to some fast times. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's a good time of the year," he said. "We should have some good
temperatures for a marathon, and it's pretty much a downhill course." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
