A gentle reader called me this week, concerned about my introduction to the &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``Notebook'' last week where I stated that I would not be taking a vacation
this summer. She was concerned about my working too hard. It's not that I &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; never take vacations. I don't really like to take them, but I occasionally
doAs a matter of fact, this past March I spent a rather enjoyable week in
Nashville, Tenn. I accompanied a friend, who was attending the Country Radio
Seminar there. So, I got to stay at the Opryland Hotel and I got to meet
country stars like Ty England, Rhett Akins, Garth Brooks and, my favorite,
Tanya Tucker. It was also rather expensive. So, unless Tanya Tucker calls and
asks me to go on tour with her, that is about it for vacations this year. Now
... on with this week's events. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Nanticoke Class of 1946 will celebrate their 50th reunion on Saturday,
July 20 at the Best Western East Mountain Inn in Wilkes-Barre. The event will
begin at 5 p.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 * * * * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Several patients at the Mercy Special Health Care Center in Nanticoke were
pleased to receive sets of casual wear (sweat suits) from the auxiliary. The
auxiliary is planning on making this a year round project. Gloria Latze is
president of the Mercy Special Care Hospital Auxiliary. What a nice idea! &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Wyoming Valley Craft Guild is sponsoring a trip to the 50th Anniversary
Craft Show of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen at Franklin &amp; Marshall
College in Lancaster. The trip will leave the Mr. Z's parking lot in Nanticoke
at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 26. For reservations call 735-0296 or 735-0958.
I'm told that this is the grandaddy of all Pennsylvania craft shows, so if you
are into crafts and homemade things this sounds like the perfect trip! &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 A Nanticoke Area business has been honored by a world renowned artist.
Christopher Radko, who creates mouth blown, hand painted glass ornaments in
his shops in Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic and Italy has chosen Dundee
Gardens in Hanover Twp. as one of his "Rising Star" stores. What this means is
that Dundee Gardens is one of only four stores in the whole state that will
carry Radko's famous works that are used in the Metropolitan Museum and the
White House. The heirloom ornaments will be available year round at Dundee
Gardens. Congratulations! &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Holy Trinity Youth Group will sponsor a Car Wash from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
on Saturday, July 20 in the church parking lot on Hanover St. Cost is $2 per
vehicle. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 * * * * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church in the Buttonwood Section of
Hanover Twp. will hold their annual bazaar on the parish grounds on July 19,
20 and 21. The fun will be held on Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
and on Sunday from 5 to 10 p.m. Joe Stanky will play on Friday, Kryger on
Saturday and Jolly Joe on Sunday. The event will be held rain or shine. Join
in the fun at Holy Cross Church! &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, along with the First United
Methodist and First Presbyterian Churches are collecting non-perishable food
items for the Christian Service Center in Plymouth. The center serves about
500 people each month from the Greater Nanticoke Area. Dry cereals are
especially needed. Bring any donations to St. John's Church, 231 E. State
Street. Arthur Turfa, the pastor of St. John's, will take the donations to
Plymouth at the end of the month. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 There are plenty of goings on this week at the Nanticoke Senior Center, at
the corner of Market and Main Streets. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Monday, July 15 -- The Atlantic City trip will meet at 7 a.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tuesday, July 16 -- Make your reservations for the Mt. Laurel Resort and
the Showmen/Sentimental Journey. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wednesday, July 17 -- 11:30 a.m. Household Tips by Betty. Too bad my sister
can't attend that seminar. She was recently married, and from what my new
brother-in-law tells me, my sister could use some help with running her
household. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Friday, July 19 -- The last day to purchase Christmas In July/Evening Fling
Tickets. $5 each. The Christmas In July luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. on
July 25, and the evening fling from 6-9 p.m. on that same day. At the Evening
Fling there will be light refreshments and music provided by Mike Shema. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Senior Center is sponsored by the Luzerne/Wyoming Counties Bureau for the
Aging. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The annual novena in honor of St. Anne will be conducted by the Rev. Ray
Whiteman, C.S.S.R at St. Francis of Assisi Church on East Green Street from
July 18 through July 26. Services will be held Monday through Friday at 11
a.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., and Sunday
Masses at 7:15 a.m., 10 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. Confessions will be heard before
and after each Mass. The Rev. Whiteman will be available for religious
counseling during the novena. Veneration of the relic of St. Anne will be held
at each service. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 * * * * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 St. Mary's Church on Belles Rd. in the Wanamie Section of Newport Twp. will
hold Atlantic City Nights on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 17 and 18 from 5-10
p.m. The event will be held on St. Mary's Parish Grounds and you must be 18
years of age or older to attend. There will be old-time boardwalk prices for
food and beverages, along with games of chance, prizes and more. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 St. Mary's Church, S. Hanover St., Nanticoke is continuing preparations for
their annual parish festival. This week, pierogi will be made beginning at 8
a.m. on Tuesday &amp; Wednesday, July 16 and 17 in the lower level of the parish
center. Construction of stands on the parish grounds will begin at 6 p.m.
tomorrow night and continue until dark. A social hour will follow each
evening's work. And, this weekend the parish bulletin will contain a special
flyer for those who wish to contribute to the festival bake sale. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Commander Fred Miller of the Nanticoke American Legion named the following
alternate delegates to the Legion convention: Edmund Chinna, John Pihanich,
Leonard Sherman, Donald Cravitz and Joe Westbrook. The Commander also
announced that no meetings at the Legion will be held during July and August.
The next meeting will not be held until Sept. 10. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Students preparing for Confirmation at St. Stanislaus Church, W. Church St.
are reminded that the Confirmation date has finally been announced. It will be
held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17 with Bishop John Dougherty as celebrant.
There are some dates before that: on Sept. 8, robe measurements will be taken.
Sept. 15 will be Candidate Sunday and a rehearsal for candidates and sponsors
will be held on Oct. 13. Candidates are reminded that attendance at the above
events are required. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
