Some GOP committee members close ranks over open ballot &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The irony of writing this letter just after our country's Independence Day
does not escape me. For what I am writing about is an abomination of democracy
and a miscarriage of civil liberties. I am referring to the Luzerne County &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Republican Committee's convention at the Independent Fire Hall in
KingstonJack Gallagher, outgoing chairman, refused even to recognize one of
his own party's committee people who tried repeatedly to bring a motion to the
floor. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hiding behind some by-laws that none of us had ever seen, he steamrolled
the direction of the convention by not allowing a motion for a vote on a
closed ballot. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If not for the good graces of Rocco Yanora asking that the convention
proceed, it appeared many present would have walked out at that point. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mr. Gallagher got his way: No chance to exercise the fundamental right to
vote in privacy; no chance not to worry about recrimination if you voted
freely. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The foregone conclusion of an open ballot became reality with Commissioner
"Red" Jones being elected to the chair. In truth, I think the commissioner
will do a fine job. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mr. Jones, I know you read these letters and editorials because you made
reference to that fact in your three-minute slamming of Mr. Yanora prior to
the vote. So read this: I along with hundreds of other GOP committee people
will not go unrecognized. We will not be ignored, ever again. Or the next
convention held by our party will be another Day of Independence. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
