Wilkes-Barre Township should give historical research its proper due &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Who discovered America, and when? According to historians, Leif Ericson was
one of the first explorers to discover North America in the 11th
centuryHowever, Christopher Columbus discovered America in the 15th century
and that is the date officially celebrated as the founding of America. Need I
say more about the founding of Wilkes-Barre Township? ("Difference in date
sign of trouble," July 8.) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The fact that Connecticut settlers were in and out of this area and
adjacent areas is not disputed; their first official settlement was near the
General Hospital. A town is not officially founded until it is so declared at
a town meeting. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Without a doubt, the findings by Catherine Bryan and her committee for
Wilkes-Barre Township's bicentennial book in 1974 about the two signs carrying
conflicting dates of the township's founding are correct. To quote John Quinn:
"You keep digging and digging and digging." This committee did volunteer many
hours to dig and dig to establish the facts. And establish them they did. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 During the celebration of the bicentennial, the Council of Wilkes-Barre
Township adopted an ordinance, enacted into law by the signature of the mayor,
establishing an official seal depicting a Native American. This, too, has been
discarded. As Mr. Quinn said, "Dig, dig, dig, before you attempt to rewrite
history. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Council, take action. Remove the signs and return the seal. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
