Evans lights up NBC's Olympics coverage &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Janet Evans is one of America's most accomplished Olympians. The swimmer is
a four-time gold medal winner and world-record holder in three eventsShe's
also one of the most popular athletes to ever wear the red, white and blue. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It was only fitting that Evans was chosen to pass the Olympic flame to
Muhammad Ali, who had the honor of lighting the Olympic Torch at Friday's
opening ceremonies at Olympic Stadium. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Those ceremonies and the subsequent days and nights of the Summer Games
have received exceptional coverage by NBC, which will help hold the attention
of millions of viewers who don't normally watch sports on television. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Viewers are sure to remember Evans, who appeared to be gliding on a cloud
as she proudly ran around the Olympic Stadium track carrying the flame. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It's hard to believe any red-blooded American watching the opening
ceremonies didn't get chill bumps as Evans did her thing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It was a shining moment in the life of the 24-year-old Californian, who is
competing in her final Olympic Games. It signified what the Olympics are all
about. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Unfortunately for Evans, she found herself on the other end of the spectrum
Monday when she fell one spot short of qualifying for the 400-meter free style
finals. She finished ninth in the morning heats at the Georgia Tech Aquatic
Center after swimming a relatively slow 4 minutes and 13.60 seconds in her
best event. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Evans was left with a bitter taste in her mouth. She was beaten by Irish
swimmer Michelle Smith, who was given a last-minute entrance into the race by
the International Olympic Committee. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Smith was allowed to swim the 400-free style after the IOC granted her an
exemption on Sunday. Smith had not swum the qualifying time for the event
until July 6, one day after the deadline. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Swimming's international governing body, FINA, had rejected Smith's entry,
but was overruled by the IOC. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Evans had to fight back tears during a television interview. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I think what went on was wrong," Evans said. "She does have the best time
in the world, but she had to break the rules to get in. The Olympics are about
competing against the best in the world, but I wish she would have gotten in
legally. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'm upset, I'm disappointed, but I also know that no one can take my
accomplishments away from me," Evans added. "I still love the Olympics. I
still love swimming." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Evans isn't a crybaby. She has every right to be angry. She played by the
rules and got burned, which defeats the spirit of Olympic competition. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ironically, Smith went on to capture the gold medal in the 400-meter free
style final Monday night. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Evans was left to wonder how it would have all played out if Smith hadn't
been reinstated by the IOC. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All may not be lost for Evans. She still has a chance to win a medal in the
800-free style, which begins today. If Evans wins the gold medal, it would be
poetic justice. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 NBC's coverage of the Summer Games has been top-notch. The camera work has
been outstanding, the network's selection of events is well-balanced and the
announcers have done their homework. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sportscasters Dick Enberg and Bob Costas helped make the opening ceremonies
even more exciting, and their enthusiasm carried over to the day-to-day
coverage. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Enberg and Costas also have added humor to the Peacock's Olympic coverage.
Enberg got off a great barb Saturday night when asked if he thought the U.S.
Water Polo team would benefit from its homecourt advantage. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I think that's definitely true," Enberg said. "War is the only thing in
which you don't want homecourt advantage." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Hannah Storm and Jim Lampley's late-night Olympic coverage on NBC also has
been outstanding. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Storm is one of the best color sportscasters on network television. Her
profiles of Olympic athletes have added zest to late-night coverage. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Storm's Sunday night profile of U.S. volleyball star Lloy Ball was an
excellent example. Ball, whose nickname is "Son of Satan," has several tattoos
on the upper part of his body, including a wicked-looking snake on his upper
arm. Storm asked him if it helps him live up to his nickname on the court. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Maybe," Ball replied. "It's all in the eye of the beholder." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The U.S. volleyball team then went on to defeat Poland, 3-0, in what could
well have been the first step toward a gold medal. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
