The recent weather has been perfect for outdoor activities and I've been
playing lots of tennis this summer. But some very exciting tennis play took
place at Newberry Country Club this past Saturday, July 20, with the second
adult-child tournament. It was part of the All American Day at NewberryAn
adult player, not necessarily their parent, is teamed with a junior player
aged nine to 15. The team of Andy and Rob Weaver defeated Mansee Patel and
Mike Baluntanski in the finals match. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 There was also an adult-junior golf tournament in which an adult is teamed
with a junior player aged eight to 15, in a nine hole captain and mate
tournament. The winners were Ron Wertman and his grandson, Adam King.
Finishing second were Dave and Dave Davis. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The day provided a great way for juniors to get tournament experience
knowing an adult was there to back them up all the way. And as an added treat
free hot dogs were available to anyone who visited the Country Club snack bar
between 11 and 1 that day. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 You can hear some country gospel at its best! The Good News Gospel Band
will be appearing at the Dallas Baptist Church at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 28.
The church is located on Route 415 (Harveys Lake Highway) next to the Idetown
Firehall. The program is free, everyone's welcome and the church is air
conditioned. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The band is a well-known local group who entertain at the Veterans Affairs
Medical Center as well as at area churches. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 * * * * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Lake-Lehman Chorus is having a unique fund raiser: a chorus music and
bake sale. If your choir or chorus is looking for some inexpensive choral
music it's available for a reasonable donation. Along with the music, that
ranges from religious to contemporary, lots of delicious homemade baked goods
will be on sale, too. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Lake-Lehman Chorus Music and Bake Sale is being held in the Lake-Lehman
High School cafeteria from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27.
The proceeds help the chorus raise money to purchase new music for the
1996-1997 school year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 * * * * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Also from Lake-Lehman comes news of country line dancing lessons hosted by
the Lake-Lehman Band Sponsors. From 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. every Tuesday the dance
lessons are given at the Idetown Firehall in Idetown. The dance teachers are
Benton residents Bob and Donna Andrews, members of the National Teachers
Association. I have a daughter who lives in New York who is absolutely hooked
on line dancing. In addition to having fun and getting a good work-out, she's
made lots of new friends. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So if you'd like to try it, the cost is only $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for
children under 12. Everyone is welcome. For more information you can call Bob

 A family-style ham supper will be held at the Sweet Valley Fire Hall, Main
Road in Sweet Valley, from 5 to 7 p.m. this Saturday, July 27. Take-outs will
be available beginning at 4:30 p.m. For $6.50 adults can purchase a dinner of
ham, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, pickled cabbage, applesauce,
rolls, butter, and coffee or tea. The cost for kids is only $3.25. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The dinner, sponsored by the Sweet Valley Volunteer Fire Company, is cooked
by the men, and the women help serve it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 There are still spaces available for vendors interested in participating in
A Flea Market on the Lawn of the Trucksville United Methodist Church. The
event is scheduled for Saturday, August 3, at the church on Church Street in
Trucksville. The cost for space rental is $10 and anyone interested can call
between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the church office, 696-3897. Or contact

 On the academic scene, I just received notice from Gettysburg College that
Dallas resident John E. Morris IV, the son of Claire and John Morris received
his bachelor of arts degree from Gettysburg this year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 * * * * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dallas Senior High School principal, Frank Galicki, has announced the
fourth nine weeks honor roll for the school. The following students earned
Honors with Distinction, which is awarded to students who have an average of
3.8 or above with no grade below a B: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Seniors: Holly Baseski, Joseph Cosgrove, and Lisa Tomaine. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sophomores: Brian Blase, Jeffrey Faneck, Eric Steltz, Jennifer Vodzak, and
David Williams. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Freshmen: Segan Millington, and Stephanie Potisek. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Lake Silkworth Lions Club recently installed the following officers for
1996-97: Mike Stefanowicz, president; Rita Stefanowicz, 1st vice president;
Lillian Piatt, 2nd vice president; Kelvin Swanger, secretary; Wayne Pettit,
treasurer; David Lipka and Stanley Wojciechowski, directors. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Rotary Club of Dallas awards a book scholarship to two students from
Lake-Lehman school district and two students from the Dallas school district
each year. The students are selected by their guidance counselors on the basis
of scholarship and all around excellence. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This year's award recipients are: Heather Brash and Christopher Rishko from
Lake Lehman High School; Melanie Love and Douglas Meyer from Dallas high
school. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rotary presents a $250 check to each recipient to help defray the cost of
books during freshman year in college. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The 50th annual Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction has come and gone,
but regular library hours and library business continue. There are some recent
new books at the library that sound like good summer reading. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Lily White" by Susan Isaacs is a thriller about a criminal defense lawyer.
"How Stella Got Her Groove Back" by Terry McMillan concerns a woman who does
it all -- from Little League to the stock market. "The Winter's Hero" by
Vassily Aksyonov is a saga of Russia under Joseph Stalin in the 1950's.
"Sacrament" by Clive Barker is the true story of Will Rabjohns, a wildlife
photographer who has AIDS. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
