Nescopeck Summer Biathlon to feature 5,000 meter run, 2 target shoots &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Running and shooting will be the order of the day Saturday morning when the &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 1996 Summer Biathlon is held at the Nescopeck Hunting and Rifle ClubThe
5,000-meter run with two shooting stops begins with a 1,500-meter lap. Then
biathletes will arrive at the shooting range where they walk to the firing
line, take the prone position with their rifles, and fire five shots at metal,
knock-down targets about 25 meters away. Then the competitors lay their rifles
down and head out on lap number two. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 About 2,000 meters later, biathletes arrive again at the shooting range.
This time they fire five shots from the standing position. After shooting,
they head for the final 1,500-meter stretch of the race. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 An easy-to-shoot .22-caliber rifle, that doesn't kick, is used. If you'd
like to bring your own .22, you may. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For each target biathletes hit, time is deducted from their total running
time. Biathletes have 15 seconds deducted from their running time for each hit
scored from the prone position and 30 seconds deducted for each hit from the
more-difficult standing position. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The event, which begins at 9:30 a.m., is expected to draw some of the
better biathletes from the East. But the event is open to anyone 14 years of
age and older. First-time participants are required to attend a safety clinic
at the rifle club at 8 a.m. At the clinic, competitors will learn the rules of
the race, correct shooting positions, safety procedures and race strategy,
such as how to slow down your heartbeat after running and before shooting. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Race-day fee is $17, which includes the use of the equipment, the safety
clinic and a T-shirt. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Prizes will be presented to the top three overall male and female
finishers. Awards also will be given to the top four male and females in the
following age groups: 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60-older. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The event, which is the second this season in Nescopeck and one of more
than a hundred that will take place across the United States this year, is
sponsored by the U.S. Biathlon Association, of Lake Placid, N.Y. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At the Nescopeck Biathlon in April, Doug Hoover, of Tyrone, won overall
honors with a time of 17 minutes, 10 seconds. Hoover scored five hits from the
prone position and four hits from the standing position. Todd Bergey, of
Betchelville, would have been the pre-race favorite, but he competed with a
leg injury and finished fourth, in 18:32, with five hits from the prone
position and three hits standing. Despite the physical handicap, Bergey won
the 30-39 age bracket. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bergey is expected to compete Saturday, and look for him to vie for top
honors. He holds the course record at Nescopeck, 15:43, set in 1995. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kim Gasper, a well-known runner from Hazleton, holds the female course
record (21:36) at Nescopeck, also set in 1995. Debbie Berner, of East Reading,
won overall-female honors in the biathlon in April, in 23:12. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The April race drew 44 participants. Saturday's race is expected to draw a
larger field. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 JACK DANIELS MILE READY TO KICK OFF TRITON CARNIVAL &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Every year I look forward to covering the B &amp; R Distributors Jack Daniels
Mile (the Triton Trot), the exciting competition that begins the annual Triton
Hose Company Carnival. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The one miler, named in memory of Tunkhannock High School swimmer and track
and cross county star Jack Daniels, begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, at the
Carnival Grounds on West Tioga Street, Tunkhannock. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Thousands of people line the streets every year to watch this race, and
then the firefighters parade that immediately follows. Afterward, people flock
into the carnival grounds for some of the best food and drink you'll find at
any carnival or bazaar around. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dallas' Hugh Mundy, who ran for the University of Notre Dame, holds the
male course record, 4:20. Patty Kupstas, who dominated the female division of
area races for several years, holds the female course record, 5:02. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The course is fairly flat with two turns, and there is a 300-meter incline
between the half and three-quarter-mile markers. The course is wheel-measured. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Registration fee is $8, which includes a T-shirt given to the first 100
entrants. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The overall male and female winners receive plaques. The first fire fighter
to finish receives a trophy. Trophies are also awarded to winners in 19 age
groups. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 DUNN, McGREEVY WIN PERKINS MEMORIAL ONE MILER &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Coulby Dunn, of Villanova University, won overall honors in the 11th annual
Dr. William J. Perkins Memorial 1-Mile Run Saturday at the Wayne County
Fairgrounds. Dunn, who has scored numerous wins in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
area this season, broke the tape in 4:54. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kim McGreevy, who qualified for the NCAA Division I Track and Field
Championships this past season for Penn State, won the female division, in a
course-record 5:24. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Matt Byrne, from St. Joseph's University, won overall honors in the 5K run,
in 15:37. Dunn, who also competed in the 5K, finished second, in 15:45. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Laurie Occhipinti, from Coastal Carolina University, won the 5K's female
division, in 19:10. But it wasn't easy, as she used a strong kick to score a
one-second victory over Joy Shakelton, 14. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
