My family and I went camping a couple of weeks ago. We followed the trail
of &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Frances Slocum, not to the Back Mountain, but to Peru, Indiana, doing
research for a children's book I'm working on. We pitched our tent near the
shores of the Mississinewa River where Maconaquah (as the Miami Indians called
her), &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; lived until she died in 1847Some may be wondering, Who is Frances Slocum,
anyway? She was a white settler kidnapped by the Lenni Lenape Indians in 1778
when she was 5 years old. She lived with Native Americans her whole life, and
was finally rediscovered by her Pennsylvania family nearly 60 years after her
capture. Her story was famous throughout the young United States and Europe at
one time, but today she is only known in Pennsylvania and Indiana. Frances
Slocum State Parks, both in Pennsylvania and Indiana are named after her. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At the Miami County Museum we saw moccasins made by Frances herself, as
well as her dagger and sheath, portraits of the White Rose of the Miamis and a
painting of her home. It was interesting to read and hear stories about the
Lost Sister of Wyoming from the Indiana perspective. We saw her grave (and
Cole Porter's, too), and tried to imagine what life was like on the
Mississinewa River in the 1800s. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Vacations are great -- for relaxing, for enjoying time with your family,
and even for learning something new. I hope you're having a great summer, and
are able to take a little time off for your own adventure. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Mountaintop Knights of Columbus will hold its annual Family Picnic
today from 12 noon-6 p.m. at St. George's Grove in Mountaintop. The usual menu
of corn, burgers, sausage, hot dogs, chicken wings, chowder and chili, along
with salads and home-baked goods and all kinds of refreshments will be served. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Albert Wesleyan Church, 865 Church Rd., Mountaintop, will hold Vacation
Bible School this week from 6:30-8 p.m. nightly. The theme will be "Great
Women of the Bible." Children aged 3-6th grade are invited to participate. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A closing picnic will be held at the church pavilion on Saturday. Please

 The Marian Sutherland Kirby Library will host the closing program for the
Summer Reading Club this Thursday, Aug. 1, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. A
weatherperson from WNEP-16 will read and share about the work of a

 I certainly cannot go without wishing my own hubby, Frank Deming, a Happy
Birthday this Thursday, Aug. 1. Scott, John and I all hope your day is as

 Here are some Olympic facts to enrich your viewing of the games this week. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The 1900 Olympic Games held in Paris attracted 1,505 athletes from 16
nations. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Government bureaucrats took over the games and nearly ruined the Olympics
before the event was returned to Baron deCouberten (the founder of the modern
games) and his committee. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 * * * * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Hobbie Volunteer Fire Company Carnival will be held on August 2nd, 3rd
&amp; 4th. Clowns will add a unique festive cheer to the event on Friday, with the
band Texas Strangers playing Friday night from 8-11 p.m. On Saturday, a Garden
Tractor Pull will be staged at 6 p.m. Jukebox Saturday Night will then play
from 7:30-11:30 p.m. Sunday is busy with a Chinese Auction beginning at 2
p.m., and a Drawing at 3:30 p.m. A Parade will weave through the borough at 4
p.m., and you can play Cow Chip Bingo at 6 p.m. Finally, Southbound will fill
the evening with music from 7-11 p.m. Food, games and the chance for prizes
await you! &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Friends of the MSK Library will meet next Wednesday, Aug. 7, 7 p.m., in
the community room. Plans will be discussed for the upcoming fall
fund-raisers, including a Pastie Sale, annual Fall Book Sale and Craft Show
and a Bus Trip. The annual Fall Membership Campaign will begin in September. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 New members are always welcome. If you would like to help with the fund

 In 1940 the Olympic Games Committee canceled the games scheduled for Tokyo
and Helsinki on account of war. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Fairview Elementary School's PTA Board will meet next Wednesday, Aug. 7,
for the first Organizational Meeting of the year. The meeting will be held in
the school library beginning at 7 p.m. All board members are encouraged to

 Mark your calendars for St. Jude's Parish Picnic, to be held August 9-11 at
the church picnic grove. Hours are: Friday and Saturday, 4 p.m.-midnight;
