HERSHEY -- Berwick's Dave Robbins was named the Most Valuable Player for
Pennsylvania Saturday night in its 45-36 loss to Ohio in the Big 33 Football
Classic in front of 18,100 fans at Hersheypark Stadium. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Boston College quarterback recruit completed 14 of 22 passes for a Big
33 passing yardage record of 251 yards and two touchdowns, including a
15-yard, third-quarter scoring pass to high school teammate Brian Remley.
Remley, who has signed with Virginia Tech, finished with four catches for 70
yards. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Ohio victory evens the recent series at two wins each. Pennsylvania won
last year's game, 28-21. The combined total of 81 points broke the Big 33 mark
of 70 points when Pennsylvania beat Maryland, 42-28, in 1990. The 38 points
Ohio scored in the first half is also a Big 33 record. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Nick Goings, a 6-foot, 208-pound running back bound for Ohio State in the
fall, scored on an 88-yard run and a 57-yard pass reception as Ohio built a
38-21 halftime lead. Goings, who clinched the game with a 34-yard touchdown
run on a draw play with 1:55 left, was named the Ohio team MVP. He ran for 176
yards, a Big 33 rushing record, on 12 carries. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ohio's offensive outburst overshadowed the performance of Robbins, who
played the first and third quarters and one offensive series in the fourth. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pennsylvania, trailing by 17 at the half, scored on its first possession of
the third quarter. Robbins hit Remley for a 15-yard touchdown with 9:02 left
to cap a six-play, 80-yard drive. Robbins hit Moon's Garrett Watkins for a
40-yard gain on third-and-27 to keep the drive alive. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ohio clinched the victory by forcing two straight incompletions by Robbins
inside the Ohio 30 with 3:57 left in the contest. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Goings then scored his third touchdown to give Ohio a 45-28 lead. Penn
Trafford's Tony Zimmerman found Washington's Andy Molinaro with a 37-yard pass
in the left corner of the end zone for Pennsylvania's last touchdown with 1:03
showing for the game's final points. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ohio, which racked up 283 yards of offense in the first half, rushed for
167 yards on just seven rushing attempts. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pennsylvania opened the scoring on the first possession of the game,
marching 79 yards on eight plays. Pennsylvania coach Mike Williams utilized a
halfback option among the six passing plays in the series. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Robbins found Molinaro alone for a 7-yard score Altoona's Tim Long added
the point-after for a 7-0 Pennsylvania lead. Robbins completed all four of his
passes on the drive, including a 27-yarder to Remley for a first down at the
Ohio 12. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ohio needed just 14 seconds to tie the score when Gary Berry returned the
kickoff 89 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown. Dan Stultz's kick
tied the contest at 7-7. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Pennsylvania offense then marched 71 yards in eight plays to take the
lead again. Harrisburg's Kenny Watson escaped two tackles deep in the
backfield before streaking down the left sideline for a 26-yard score. A
roughing the punter penalty kept the Pennsylvania drive alive. Long's kick
made it 14-7. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ohio needed but five plays to drive 85 yards to tie the game again.
Quarterback Mike Bath hit Goings with a screen pass that turned into a 57-yard
touchdown. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Taking advantage of a new rule (see game notes), Stultz booted a 33-yard
field goal at the end of the first quarter while Long missed wide right. Ohio
took a 17-14 lead into the second quarter. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Following an Ohio punt of 15 yards, Pennsylvania recaptured the lead five
plays later on a 5-yard pass from Zimmerman to Watkins. Long's kick gave
Pennsylvania a 21-17 lead. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ohio took over from there, scoring on three straight possessions to lead
38-21 at halftime. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Notes: Jim Cantafio, Wyoming Valley West head coach, served as rules
chairman for Saturday night's contest. The Spartans' coach was making sure
both teams followed the game's special rules. Among those special rules set
just for the Big 33 Classic were: a base 5-2 defense with no stunting or
blitzing and man coverage in the secondary; each team must pass a minimum of
40 percent; each player on both teams -- except for the kickers -- must play a
minimum of 15 plays. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One rule added in for this year's game was an attempted field goal by each
team at the end of the first and third quarters. The Pennsylvania and Ohio
kickers each attempted a 33-yard field goal worth three points. Following the
third quarter, the two kickers had the option of trying a 40-yarder worth
three points or a 45-yarder worth four points. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 McKeesport's Brandon Short, currently vying for a starting spot at
linebacker at Penn State University, watched Saturday's game from the
sidelines. Last year's Pennsylvania MVP in the Big 33 Classic, he missed last
season at Penn State because of a knee injury. He finished his high school
career by leading McKeesport to the PIAA Class AAAA championship in 1994, with
a 17-14 win over Downingtown. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Berwick's George Curry, on hand to watch former players Dave Robbins and
Brian Remley participate in the contest, received the Pennsylvania Football
Coaches Association's Class AAA Coach of the Year Award during the Big 33
banquet Friday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
