 BRIEFS &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Lehman girl named student of the month &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Barnes Kenpo Karate Systems, Lehman, announces that Angela Wagner was named
student of the month for JuneAngela, 7, is a student in the Lake-Lehman School
District. Her interests include karate, fishing, gardening, soccer and
basketball. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 She and her brothers, Brian and Mark, are the children of Tim and Adele
Wagner of Lehman. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Carverton native wins Maslow Award &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Clark Switzer, a former resident of Carverton, recently received Wyoming
Seminary's Frances and Louis Maslow Award for teaching excellence. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The award is presented annually by the school's board of trustees to a
faculty member who has demonstrated effective teaching and support of the
program and ideals of the school, and who has been a positive influence on
student life. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Switzer, who teaches social studies and coaches a variety of sports, has
been a member of the Wyoming Seminary faculty since 1976. He earned a
bachelor's degree from King's College and a master's degree in counseling from
the University of Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A graduate of Dallas High School, he and his wife, Debbie, reside in West
Pittston with their sons, Dustin and Christian. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dr. Rivera joins &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Health Center staff &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dr. Maria-Josefina Santos Rivera has joined the Monroe-Noxen Health &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Center, Route 29, Noxen, as a member of its medical staff. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rivera recently completed the Wyoming Valley Family Practice Residency
Program, Kingston. She also served as general medical officer at the U.S. Army
Hospital in West Berlin, West Germany. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 She is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines,
and completed a family practice residency at Philippine General Hospital of
the University of the Philippines. Rivera received additional training in
internal medicine at Fitzgerald Mercy Catholic Medical Center, Lansdowne. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rivera is a recipient of the Benavides Award for Social Commitment and the
Award for Superior Performance from the U.S. Army Hospital. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lehman woman appointed director &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Frank Oliver, dean of institutional advancement at College Misericordia, &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 announced recently that Denise Miscavage has been named director of alumni
relations at the college. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Miscavage, a resident of Lehman, holds a bachelor's degree in French from
Tufts University, a bachelor's degree in English from Misericordia, and a
master's degree in English from Lehigh University. She is currently a doctoral
candidate at Lehigh University. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Miscavage has previously been an English instructor at both Wilkes
University and Lehigh University, and has worked as an administrator for
TIAA-CREF in New York City. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Local students win first place &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mandy Ptashinski and David Hozempa recently competed in the Talent Olympics
held at the Mountain Laurel Resort. They were awarded first place in the
duo-trio tap dance category in the age 13-15 division. David and Mandy are
students at the David Blight School of Dance in Wilkes-Barre. Mandy, an eighth
grade student at the Lake-Lehman Middle Level Education Building, is the
daughter of Ron and Barbara Ptashinski of Lehman. David is the son of Charles
and Rosemary Hozempa, Dallas. He is an eighth grade student at Gate of Heaven
School, Dallas. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Local residents elected to board &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The College Misericordia Board of Trustees recently elected three Back
Mountain residents as officers. Louis T. Alesi, a member of the board since
1990, was elected chair. Alesi is also president and chief executive officer
of InterMetro Industries Corporation. Jack L. Burke, president and CEO of
Pennsylvania Millers Mutual Insurance Company, was elected vice-chair. Burke
has been a member of the board since 1993. James D. Harkins, who joined the
board in 1989, was re-elected as secretary. Harkins is the CEO of Penn State

 Local residents plan ball &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lina Schifano, Dallas, and Marlene Lyons, Dallas, will serve as chairperson
and co-chairperson, respectively, for the 28th Annual Starlight Ball sponsored
by the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Auxiliary, Wyoming Valley Health Care
System. The ball will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Woodlands Inn and
Resort, Plains Township, beginning with a cocktail hour at 7 p.m. This year's
event, "An Affair to Remember," will feature entertainment by the Gene Dempsey
Orchestra and Fancy Dancer. Tickets are by invitation only. From left are:
