NANTICOKE -- When they extended his $92,000 contract in May, the trustees
of Luzerne County Community College knew retaliation complaints were pending
against President Tom Moran. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "But we thought he was doing a good job and that he deserved an additional
year on his contract," said Joseph Kluger, solicitor for the LCCC Board of
Trustees. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Moran was hired last year to replace President Donald Bronsard, who
resigned after complaints of sexual harassment and discrimination were brought
against him and other college officials. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The state Human Relations Commission confirmed Tuesday that Moran is
accused in all four of the retaliation complaints against LCCC that were
docketed last week. At least four of seven women who filed sexual harassment
complaints now allege that the college and specific officials, including
Moran, retaliated against them for doing so. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 On Tuesday, Moran denied retaliating against anyone who filed complaints.
He said he was hired to stabilize the campus. But when he tried to accomplish
that goal by using "normal supervisory authority" his efforts were rebuffed.
So, he said, "I gave up." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 According to the Human Relations Commission: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lisa Nelson, LCCC director of public information, alleges retaliation by
Moran. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sandy Long, director of marketing/alumni, alleges retaliation by former
President Bronsard, former trustee Leonard Falcone, Vice President John
Pisano, and Moran. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kathleen Goeringer, director of printing and publications, and Krista
Gromalski, former assistant director of public information, allege retaliation
by Bronsard, Pisano and Moran. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Moran dismisses their allegations as little more than a legal ploy to get
more money from a possible monetary settlement. "I think their lawyer coached
them very well." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One of the women, who asked not to be identified, said Moran placed
offensive sayings about women and the workplace on campus message boards. She
said he removed some of the women who filed complaints from staff committees,
removed equipment from their offices and assumed some of their duties. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 She said Moran would give credit for accomplishments to male staff members,
but not the women who also had been involved. None of the other women would
comment. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "The politics by top level administrators here is horrendous, especially
when you have to work with them every day," she said. "You can walk down the
hall and Mr. Moran won't even say `Hi' to you. It does hurt." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In May, the trustees extended Moran's contract, which was to expire in June
1997, to June 1998. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Board member Charles Gelso said the trustees knew a retaliation complaint
was going to be filed when they voted on Moran's contract. The board was
informed of the allegations against Moran by attorney Kluger. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the board wanted to give Moran the benefit of the doubt until all the
facts were in and the allegations thoroughly investigated, Gelso said. If the
allegations prove true, he said, the board might consider firing Moran. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It depends on how serious they are. If it's clear there was retaliation,
there would have to be severe sanctions," Gelso said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Board member Robert Patton said he has complete confidence in Moran. "I've
known Tom Moran for 50 years and he's not capable of that type of thing." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gelso said he voted to extend the contract with the understanding that it
would give the board time to find a new president. While a search committee
has yet to be formed, Gelso believes the search unofficially started the day
of the contract vote. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Until a new president is found, Moran vows not to give up his job. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I refuse to be beaten down by something that is not true," he said. "It
hurts when you find yourself without any good defense or any way to stop it." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the women who allege retaliation, three of whom still work at LCCC,
maintain they are the ones who have been hurt. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "No one has offered us a hand since we came forward," one of the women
said. "But what hurts the most is that the Board of Trustees has not come out
and supported us." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
