I had two reminders this past week, if I really needed one, about how fast
this summer is going by. Twice last weekend I saw geese heading South in their &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``V'' formation. Then, while driving in Plymouth I saw boys walking home
from mini-football practice; helmets, uniforms and all. Before you know it,
high school football practice will start. Then the kids will go back to
schoolThen the leaves will change color. Then ... snow. Just the thought of
winter should make everyone want to go and check out these summer events
happening in the Nanticoke Area this week. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; * * * * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A vesper service will be held at the historic 1833 Old River Church at 6
p.m. next Sunday, Aug. 18. The church is located on Route 239 in Wapwallopen.
Anyone who has period dress is encouraged to wear it. The message will be
given by Albert Lewis. Guest soloist will be Robert Fry. Harold Hinchcliff
will be the Liturgist. Organist Marilou Hinchcliff and guitarist Will Brandau
will direct the music. After the service, refreshments will be served. The
service is sponsored by the Old River Church Cemetery Association. Anyone with
family, ancestors or friends buried in the cemetery are encouraged to come and
visit. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 More information on the Fourth Annual Golf Tournament for Pope John Paul II
School. The tournament will be held on Friday, Aug. 23 at the Mill Race Golf
Course in Benton. Golfers may register by contacting Earl W. Lohman, Jr. at
735-5533 or James Jones, Pope John Paul II Principal at 735-7935. A Golf
Committee Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12 at Green Streets
Tavern, West Green St., Nanticoke. Volunteers who wish to help with the
tournament are asked to attend this meeting. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sponsors are needed for this event. You can become a Diamond Sponsor for a
contribution of $100, a Ruby Sponsor for a contribution of $60, an Emerald
Sponsor for a contribution of $40, and a Cart Sponsor for a contribution of

Team forming in the Nanticoke Deanery are reminded that a training session

 St. Mary's Travel will be taking a bus trip to Lancaster to see "Christmas

$48 per adult, and that includes transportation, show, and a meal (since it is

 I had the opportunity to meet the Polish Bobsled team at the Nanticoke Fair
last week. They are in this country to train and to raise money for the 1998
winter Olympics. Good luck to them! &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 New elementary students who will be attending school in the Greater
Nanticoke Area School District for the first time this fall must register for
the 1996-1997 school term as soon as possible. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Students from Newport Twp., West Nanticoke, Plymouth Twp. and Conyngham
Twp. will attend the K.M. Smith Elementary School in Sheatown (my old alma
mater). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Students from Nanticoke will attend the Kennedy and Lincoln Elementary
Schools, Nanticoke. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 New students must bring a copy of their birth certificate, immunization,
social security number and a copy of last year's report card. Registrations
will be taken between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily in the principal's office. For

 The Nanticoke Senior Center, at the corner of Main and Market Streets in
Nanticoke has seats available for an Atlantic City trip on August 19, and for
a trip to the Candlelight Dinner Theatre in Milton on August 28 to see "The

 Perhaps you were wondering about some of the activities at the center, well
there are cards, games, crafts, fitness programs and more. There truly is
something for everyone to do. No reason to be bored in Nanticoke! The PEPPI
Program is held Monday and Thursday mornings at 9:45 a.m. You can rebuild your
muscle mass with a few simple exercises and have fun doing it! The Senior
Striders Walking Program is also in full swing and it is never too late to
join in. Just come into the center, pick up a booklet and you'll be on your
way. You can walk alone, with a group, on a treadmill -- it all counts. Just
record your time and mileage and turn in your monthly log to the staff.
Incentive prizes are offered. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Annual All Center Bowling Tournament will be held on October 7 &amp; 8 at
Chacko's in Wilkes-Barre. Registration forms will be available shortly.
Reminder -- bowlers must have a current (1996) membership card to participate.
The center is hoping for a record turnout. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, Nanticoke, is in
the process of making plans for its Annual Labor Day Festival which will be
held on the church grounds on August 31, September 1 and 2 in the Hanover
section of Nanticoke. More information will follow in the "Nanticoke Notebook"
as those dates come closer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mocanaqua, Shickshinny, Wapwallopen, West Nanticoke, Ashley, Sugar Notch, as
