Delegates eye pork on GOP convention menu &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Pork images literally sparkle in a thousand overhead chandelier crystals as &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pennsylvania Republicans dig into their grilled sausage and greasy fried
baconWe're at the Bell Atlantic-Pennsylvania Inc. breakfast honoring Gov. Tom
Ridge and the state delegation to the Republican National Convention. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As guests chew the fat, Ridge talks of crime, boot camps and kids who break
the law. Words crisp as the part in Ridge's hair fall from his lips with the
ease of a drill sergeant shouting orders to a company of green recruits. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Accountability and consequences, that's what it's all about," Ridge says. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Yes, being a Republican is serious business. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So why are these men laughing? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bruce Phillips and Paul DeFabo are laughing because they're veterans at
this sort of thing. Political conventions are old hat to these two good
buddies who have been Luzerne County political allies for years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Upcoming days will be long and hot. Inland temperatures might reach 105. Do
not expect happy days in a navy blue double-breasted blazer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 DeFabo, 56, and Phillips, 38, know better than to show up for the day
dressed like centerfolds for Fortune magazine. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 These two alternate delegates to the convention have seen it all before. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "This is my fifth trip to a convention," says DeFabo as he shovels
scrambled eggs into his mouth while standing near a table loaded with food. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A very politically savvy guy, DeFabo has on a nice madras sports shirt and
casual slacks. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Phillips is attired in a smashing striped seersucker-looking shirt that is
perfect for the almost perfect day that is predicted. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Monday's breakfast is just wrapping up, and delegates are grabbing their
cameras to snap one last shot of Ridge and his perky wife before they leave
the room. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 DeFabo; his friend, Delores Strish; and Phillips and his wife, Margaret,
are ready to head downtown to the convention center for a day of platform
haggling. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The bus leaves in a few minutes and won't be returning to the Hilton Beach
and Tennis Resort, where they're staying, until after 8 p.m. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Today, their biggest job takes place at the convention center. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Although it's mostly bureaucratic procedural claptrap, it's tiring. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That's why they showed up at the end of the stuffy breakfast where Ridge
promised more than he can ever possibly deliver to a room full of die-hard
opponents of gun control, gay rights, affirmative action, marijuana, feminism,
Third World immigration and tobacco regulation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As far as the convention's 1,990 delegates and 6,000 GOP delegate
alternates, guests and VIPs are concerned, these issues are totally crucial to
improving America. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I mean totally, dude. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Taxes and free trade are big topics among this crowd, as well. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 To them, the fewer taxes the better. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Convention guest Rusty Flack, a Back Mountain businessman and president of
Diamond Manufacturing, slams his mitts together when Ridge tells the gathering
that "Bob Dole will make good on Bill Clinton's promise to cut taxes." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Flack slam-claps again when Ridge talks specifically of lowering corporate
taxes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sitting beside Flack, Pocono Lake alternate delegate William Quinn listens
intently as he takes it all in. So does delegate M. Scott Burnside, another
quiet man who is new to all this political posturing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Even 36-year-old investment banker Marc Holtzman seems subdued this
morning, smiling politely at everyone, just the way you'd expect a businessman
and Moscow resident with manners and money to do. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That's Moscow as in Russia, by the way. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Holtzman was the high vote-getter of all the delegates who ran from the
11th Congressional District. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Prospective vice presidential nominee Jack Kemp is a personal friend. Has
been for years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Holtzman's in this for the long haul. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And, despite the play-time Southern California atmosphere of this week's
carefully crafted fun and games, this is all serious business. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Real issues face real people from the West Coast to the East. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Politics is a high-stakes game. Nonetheless, it's still a game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 DeFabo and Phillips are smart enough to recognize this. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So they make the best of a good situation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Lots of these people are first-time delegates," Defabo says. "They aren't
really sure what's expected of them." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So they act interested and try to dress for success. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Throughout the room, too many people seem dressed for prom night at
undertaker school. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As always, lead stiff Tom Ridge seems like he just got shot out of a starch
machine. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Not Phillips. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Yesterday, I was the only adult man in the room wearing short pants," he
says with a twisted giggle that tells me he enjoys pushing the envelope, as
they say. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Still, Phillips and DeFabo, as well as Margaret Phillips are pleased with
the way things are turning out. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They've been Kemp people for years and worked for him in 1988 when he ran
for president. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We were at his home in Washington when he announced his candidacy," DeFabo
says with a twinge of pride in his voice. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Marc Holtzman had a fund-raiser for him at his house in Kingston," chimes
in Phillips." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 No wonder they seem energized. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Before Bob Dole announced Kemp as his running mate, things seemed rather
dull. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Now, it's a grand old party after all. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 With Kemp's local connections to the Wyoming Valley, the old quarterback
just might do us some special favors if his team emerges victorious in
November. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Maybe he'll build us a stadium. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Free pork for everybody," I scream silently to myself, as the smoky smells
of bacon fill the air. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
