Championship racewalk tops Sallie Mae card &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The fourth annual Sallie Mae Valley Classic is just around the corner. This
year's event will feature five races, highlighted by the United States of &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; America Track and Field (USATF) 5K National Championship RacewalkThe races,
which annually raise funds for the Osterhout Free Library, are set for Aug. 25
at the Student Loan Servicing Corporation's local branch on Lasley Avenue at
the Hanover Industrial Estates in Hanover Township. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Big cash awards, equal prize money for men and women in three races, and
prize money for male and female masters (40-years-of-age and over) winners are
big reasons why the Sallie Mae Valley Classic is considered the area's best
race. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The morning's activities begin with the 10K run, starting at 8 a.m. The top
five finishers in the 10K run will receive cash awards. The overall male and
female winners will each receive $500. Second-place male and female finishers
will receive $300. The third-place male and female finishers will win $200.
Fourth-place finishers will take away $150. And the fifth-place finishers will
win $100. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The second race of the day will be the USATF 5K National Championship
Racewalk, a race that is expected to draw top racewalkers from throughout the
United States, including some who recently competed in the Olympic Trials and
the Olympics in Atlanta. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This race, set for 9:45 a.m., will feature the most prize money of the day. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Overall male and female winners will take home $1,000. Second-place
finishers will receive $600. Third-place finishers will win $400. Fourth-place
finishers will be awarded $300. Fifth-place finishers will win $200. And sixth
place will be good enough for $100. There is also a team competition, with
three or more athletes per team, in the 5K National Championship Racewalk. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Last year, Sallie Mae hosted the USATF 5K Eastern Regional Championship
Racewalk. That event was a huge success. Not wanting to rest on their laurels,
officials from the Sallie Mae race secured the rights to hold the national
championship here this year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We're very excited about having the USATF 5K National Championship
Racewalk at Sallie Mae," said Colleen Smith, who is in charge of publicity for
this year's Classic. "There's been tremendous cooperation from our sponsors,
from the library staff, and from the volunteers (most of whom are Sallie Mae
employees). Everyone wants to make sure that the race is a first-class event." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Race number three will be the 5K Run at 11 a.m. Awards for this race are
the same as the 10K Run. The top three male and female Masters finishers in
the 10K Run, 5K National Championship Racewalk and the 5K Run will receive
$300, $200 and $100 respectively. And anyone setting a course record in any of
the three races mentioned above will receive an additional $250. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lower temperatures for last year's races made conditions ideal for athletes
to go after the course records. And they took advantage, setting six records. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kenya's Francis Wanderi set a male course record, 29 minutes and 53
seconds, in the 10K Run, and Lisa McDonald-Reilly, of Orwigsburg, set a female
record, 35:39. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Arturo Huerta, a Mexican runner who lives in Canada, set a male course
record of 20:16 in last year's 5K Eastern Regional Championship Racewalk.
Teresa Vail, of Pine Plains, N.Y., who competed in the Olympic Trials, set a
female course record, 22:03. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Khalid Khannouchi, from Brooklyn and formerly of Morocco, set a male course
record, 14:15, in last year's 5K Run. Catherine Hderera, of Kenya, set a
female course record, 16:03. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Athletes looking to set records this year will have their work cut out for
them, especially if warmer temperatures persist. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But not everybody who competes in the Sallie Mae races is looking to set a
record. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We want to especially encourage walkers who walk for fun or just to stay
fit," Smith said. "That's why we have two walks. These walkers are invited to
participate in the 5K Fitness Walk. And it's a great way to support the
library." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Fitness Walk, which starts at 11 a.m., is a non-competitive event. Each
participant will receive a certificate of completion. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The fifth race is the Kids' Quarter-Mile Fun Run, beginning at 11:05. There
are two heats: one for kids 6 and under; the other for kids from ages 7-12.
Each participant will receive a special gift and a certificate of
accomplishment. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The first 500 participants to register for the races, not including the
Kids' Fun Run, will receive a commemorative, six-color T-shirt. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Preregistration fees are $12 through today. After today, the fee is $15.
The fee for the Kids' Fun Run is $2. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Registration and packet pickup on race day begins at 6:30 a.m. and ends 15
minutes before the start of each event. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The 15th annual Wilkes-Barre Triathlon '96 (1.5K swim, 40K bike, 11K run)
starting at 8:15 a.m. at the Harveys Lake Beach Club and finishing at the Penn
State University Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman Twp. Info: race hotline at
