Amendment Boosts Retired Officers' Pensions

HAZLETON -- Michael J. Bogansky swept his big arms through the air as he
talked about his deceased daughter Deborah. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But then he pulled his meaty, builder's hands to his face and the knuckles
of his thumbs to his eyes and he sobbed -- a confused and tired man trapped in
the fluster that began when Deborah was found dead in her home. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "You can lose your parents. You can lose brothers and sisters. But it never
hurts as much as losing one of your children," said Bogansky, a Hazle Township
contractor for 33 years and the father of five. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "There hasn't been a day in Debby's life that she didn't talk to her
mother," he said as he cried. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Deborah Bogansky Gorski, 38, was reported dead Aug. 10 by her husband, Dr.
Eugene Gorski, at their Hazle Township home. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 By Tuesday, authorities confirmed the death was "suspicious" and a criminal
probe started. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Deborah's relatives say they have been watching with amazement every day. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A second autopsy. Strong questions by a coroner about Gorski's actions.
Paperwork citing "unidentifiable marks" on Deborah's face. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's devastating. Absolutely devastating," said Deborah's sister,
Michaelene Panzarella, 34, Hazleton. She described her sister as the linchpin
of a close family -- the eldest sibling who didn't have children but who
worked hard for the love of her relatives. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Debby was always the one" who organized reunions, planned parties,
reminded the others of anniversaries and birthdays, Panzarella said. "They
would all go out to buy presents, like for Christmas, and they would all go up
to Debby's house because she would wrap them all," Michael Bogansky said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "People keep asking, `What do you think? What do you know?' How do we know
what to think?" said Deborah's brother, Freeland borough police officer David
Bogansky. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The relatives gathered with a reporter at Panzarella's home Friday
afternoon to stress that the family has little concrete information about the
death. They also said they are firmly joined in grief and they stress that the
union includes Gorski. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 David Bogansky, 30, said, "The first call I make every morning is to my
mother, asking, `Are you OK? Did you sleep? Did you eat?' The second call is
to Gene." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Though officials, including Luzerne County District Attorney Peter Paul
Olszewski Jr., have raised questions about Gorski's actions regarding the
death, Deborah's relatives say they will not make rash judgments. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They say Deborah seemed happy and content with her husband, and Gorski has
talked with Deborah's relatives daily since the death. They also say they had
no hint of a marital problem, and they do not believe Gorski would have wanted
to hurt Deborah. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But the relatives also acknowledge being confused about the death. They
said: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They have no explanation for why Gorski told investigators that Deborah had
been so upset before her death that he prescribed her anti-anxiety pills.
Panzarella said Deborah told no one in the family she needed drugs, not even
her mother, Diane Bogansky, whom Deborah visited almost daily. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Attorney Ted Laputka, Hazleton, Gorski's attorney, earlier this week said
Deborah had been taking pills because she was upset about her weight. That
angered David Bogansky. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Did attorney Laputka tell you she just lost 10 pounds? Gene told her she
was doing good. She was trying and she was doing good. She wasn't fretting,"
he said. "I don't think attorney Laputka should be talking about my sister's
weight when she's dead." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Relatives do not know what police are trying to determine by questioning
numerous people in the case, including Deborah's co-workers at General Foam
Corp., West Hazleton, where she was an office worker. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I think they must have interviewed everybody Debby's ever known in her
whole life," Panzarella said, though she stressed the family is glad police
are asking many questions. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They question attorney Laputka's timing in telling the doctor not to answer
questions about the death. He gave the advice at a funeral home when the
family gathered for a service, David Bogansky said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I felt it was totally inappropriate to come to the wake and try to cause a
dispute within our family," David Bogansky said. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The attorney has said he simply wants to keep the doctor from talking to
anyone about a death that is under investigation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The family says no one has revealed to them the presence of a suicide note,
yet Gorski told investigators he believed the death was suicide. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Panzarella said all Deborah's relatives harbor hope that toxicological
tests, the questions from the police and statements by those interviewed
reveal what happened to her. "There's all these blank hours. You just need all
that filled in ... you could put so many scenarios in your head." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 She and David Bogansky added that they would rather learn unpleasant
answers than none at all. Their father nodded his head slowly in agreement. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I believe we are going to find out," Panzarella said. "But it's always in
the corner of your mind that you might not. That's the worst torture, thinking
you might never know." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
