Reader not amused or enlightened by columnist's convention coverage &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What a strange sense of humor The Times Leader displayed by sending
ultra-liberal Steve Corbett to cover the Republican National Convention in San &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; DiegoAnd the joke was on us, the readers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 However, in retrospect, this reader found nothing amusing in Steve's petty
prose. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I struggled through the Aug 13 report -- some McDade bashing, fatty foods
and Republican dress code. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I barely made it through the next day's report -- McDade-bashing as the
main and only topic, some more Republican dress code. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I dreaded the Aug. 15 report and rightly so. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But hey, man, I'm no dude, so I slugged through two columns of an interview
with "some veteran local GOP political operatives," who used many words to say
very little at the San Diego Zoo, with the elephant providing Corbett's
imaginary background commentary. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And for this The Times Leader sent a reporter clear across the country! &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One more day to go. Who would be on Corbett's hit list on Aug. 16? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Marc Holtzman, that's who. But he got jabbed only gently, and I yawned my
way through four columns of inconsequential chit-chat between Marc and Steve.
All of which could have been written straight out of the newsroom without
straining Corbett's expense account. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Back in the newsroom, Steve had more to say, and he started off by
declaring that "Bob Dole's head looked like a pine nut on the tropical salad." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 His colorful language illustrates his problem: If he wants to be taken
seriously and safeguard his credibility, a commentator should not allow
legitimate philosophical differences to degenerate into caricature. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That is the domain of the political satirist. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
