``Mountain Laurels'' is a regular series of letters from readers conveying

 Once again I want to thank you and everyone at The Times Leader for your
exceptional support. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It seems ironic to me that the Community Arts Center can receive this kind
of attention and support from a newspaper 75 miles away, while the one that's
literally next door shows absolutely no community interest. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Times Leader is indeed appropriately named. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Hospice Hundred Ride for Dignity was a great success because of the
outstanding community support for the event. Proceeds from the ride benefit
Hospice Saint John, a division of Lutheran Welfare Services, which has been
serving terminally ill patients and their families for 17 years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We would like to thank the 154 cyclists, hundreds of volunteers, the many
corporate sponsors, and the devoted committee members who helped make this
event a reality. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Each one did their part in helping us to raise over $60,000 and assure that
hospice care will continue to be available to everyone in our community. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 My mother passed away last week at Valley Crest Nursing Home where she had
been a resident for 1 1/2 years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the staff,
especially the nurses and aids on south annex, for their care and compassion
toward my mother. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The valley is fortunate to have such a caring home for our elderly. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 I hope the idea catches on and other groups have Peace Camps for teens, and
for us adults also. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 What a great way to learn to appreciate and celebrate the riches of
diversity: diversity among peoples and diversity within the entire
universe-earth community. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I hope everyone who reads this sends a contribution to The Peace Center so
that its much-needed services within the community continue. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Help Eagle's project fly &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I am an Eagle Scout candidate from Troop 232 of Gate of Heaven, Dallas. Bob
Neher is my scoutmaster. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I built as my Eagle project two wooden bridges on the Back Mountain Rail
Trail Luzerne section to help walkers, runners, bikers and the physically
challenged safely pass over two areas eroded by mountain run-off water. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 St. Joseph Center help &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This year for the 35th time, a band of cheerful and generous women met over
the course of many months to plan St. Joseph's Center's summer festival. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 They solicited time, energy, money and goods from hundreds of friends,
relations, organizations, and companies. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This year as the St. Joseph Center's festival moved to Marywood, everything
changed. Undaunted, the auxiliary women in conjunction with St. Joseph's
Center staff met each new challenge with grit and grace. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Just two weeks before the festival took place, it was my sad duty to inform
staff that, at this time, St. Joseph's Center is unable to offer the annual
raise. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Anyone who has ever visited the center knows that better staff cannot be
found anywhere. Our staff knows that revenues from the festival do not go into
salaries, but are used directly for improving the environment for the
residents. Yet they worked with might and main to create a successful
festival. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 St. Joseph's Center is all about people, and recognizing this, the people
of Northeastern Pennsylvania are constant in their support of the center. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In the name of the Sisters of IHM and of those served by St. Joseph's
Center, I thank all who contributed to the overwhelmingly successful Festival
'96. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
