WILKES-BARRE -- At the Charles T. Adams Senior Center on Wednesday
afternoon, phones rang endlessly as workers rearranged the furniture in the
dining room. The fax machine whirred while staffers swept floors and tidied
up. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Surrounded by the chaos of Hillary Rodham Clinton's pending visit, at a
lone table in the rapidly changing dining room, five seniors caught up in a
card game said they were excited by today's visit by the first lady with local
roots. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; "We need to promote Wilkes-Barre in any way we can," said Harry Lloyd, a
75-year-old Wilkes-Barre resident. "This means recognition for the area, and
God knows what else." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The local senior center, which has previously hosted such political bigwigs
as former Vice President Walter Mondale and former Gov. Bob Casey, was moving
hastily to prepare for Clinton's this afternoon as details of her appearance
became available. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's important that she comes here," said 74-year-old Ted Zalinski, a
retired military veteran from Wilkes-Barre. " She's our first lady and he's
our president, and they're trying to do the best they can for this country." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Clinton is scheduled to arrive at the center at 1:40 p.m. from the
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and spend about an hour in a
discussion with area seniors. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A statement issued Wednesday by the Clinton-Gore campaign said the topics
will include Medicare, Medicaid and the Older Americans Act, which funds
senior citizens programs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "It's important to show that someone is truly interested," said Tom Cresci,
the director of Community Services for the Bureau of the Aging. "By coming to
the center, they're exposing issues that are important to the elderly. And
let's face it, this is a one-time opportunity." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Center Director Karen Weed said Clinton will talk with a panel of eight
seniors selected from those involved with various local agencies -- the Bureau
of Aging, the Adams Center and others. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In addition, about 80 of the 105 members of the center who have signed up
for lunch today will be able to attend. They'll be chosen from a lottery
earlier in the day. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I think people understand that we're dealing with limited space," Weed
said. "We're dealing with adults who realize that you can't put 1,000 people
in a space for 300." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Located on West Market Street, the senior center provides services such as
low-cost meals and health screenings for more than 1,200 members. The center
also offers activities such as day trips and dance classes, as well as a place
to gather to watch television or play cards. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "We may have 110 here for lunch, and then another 25 come in the afternoon
for a line-dance class who didn't come for lunch," Weed said. "Some we only
see every two or three months, when we have a trip or a party or a health
screening." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Of those few who remained at the center through the afternoon's
preparations, all said they would try to attend the first lady's appearance. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I think she's a great lady," Zalinski said. "It's not just because she's
from this area, but she's got a lot of intelligence. And I like Clinton as a
president." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
