Make New Year's good to the last drop &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Editors' note: This is the first attempt at co-writing in this space. Of
course, we realize that, at least in this case, two heads might not be better
than oneWe like the idea of dropping things off high buildings, especially on
holidays. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The coal drop helped make Wilkes-Barre's inaugural New Year's celebration a
success. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Why should anyone have to drive hours to be crushed among folks thronging
for a look at something being dropped? We should be able to do everything in
Wilkes-Barre as well as it's done other places. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Who needs Dick Clark? We have Tom McGroarty. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Our only problem with the local celebration was that it could have been
more exciting. Nothing was actually dropped. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Where was the climax, the smash, the thud? You know the thrill you feel
when the baseball narrowly misses your head along third base, or when the
snowball grazes your ear. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Let's really drop something next year. But what? Here are some suggestions: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A live bee hive, the city's emblem. Vendors could hawk 1997 bee swatters
and we could give prizes for the most kills. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One of the county's new Chevy Blazers, to show that nobody needs them. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A 25-foot pierogi, into a hot tub of butter on wheels. Then we could donate
the goop to Graterford. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gifford R. Cappellini. We'll warn poppa da judge so he can arrange a soft
landing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Any cool and revealing document you really don't want anyone to see. Just
give them to us and we'll shred them for confetti. (Yeah, OK. We might make a
copy or two, but, hey, this is America.) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 100,000 pounds of pork. Imagine the music of the thuds. Only long-time
registered Democrats get to reap the rump. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Butch Hobson's old Red Barons uniform, with bottles of Coke in every
pocket. Crash. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A million Topps "Traitor" cards, complete with cartoon drawings of former
executives of the trading card company. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Flood mud. Lots. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The two greediest teachers in the valley, so they feel what it's really
like to strike -- ground. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All the ingredients for pizza, onto a big bed of dough shaped like Red
Jones. We could raffle off slices of Red. If nobody bites, we'll have backhoes
from the Regional Equipment Center standing by. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 An entire polka band, safely and still singing, onto a giant accordion. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The biggest zucchini from the Luzerne County Fair, if McGroarty volunteers
to let it splatter all over him. Why not? He's a fun guy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 That big cow along 309. What is that thing doing there anyhow? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mercury. Nah, just kidding. We don't want a mass evacuation just when the
fun starts. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A couple of the Cs from LCCC. We like L3C better. And drop those lawsuits
while you're at it, even it means settling up with the women. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Steve Corbett, onto Mike McGlynn. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The state check for the arena. Hopefully, it won't bounce. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The "Yak" from Pete Yaksick. Or the "sick" from Pete Yaksick. How about
just Pete? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One of the live deer from Frances Slocum State Park. Let's heat up the
animal rights debate a little? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Ticket prices at the Kirby. That's why the seats are empty, duh. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The pretense that Wilkes-Barre has to spend lots of money to have fun. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Why drop what we are. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
