Readers call to talk politics, school policies &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Yes, I would like to know why on those big signs in front of the Stegmaier
building, say thanks to Tom McGroarty and thanks to Paul Kanjorski, the
president's name isn't on them, also. If the president hadn't put the &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Stegmaier project in the federal budget, it would never have happened. He
deserves some of the credit for making it happen. He paid a lot of attention
to Northeastern Pennsylvania, I think he deserves some of the creditI'm
looking at your Jan. 2 paper, Editorial page. On the left side a column by Dr.
Thomas Sowell and on the right side a column by David Parmelee. I'm wondering,
is this a mistake? Are you finally starting to put some fairness and
objectivity into your writing, that you have two good conservative writers in
on the same day? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Binding arbitration with a no-strike clause should be mandated in the
Pittston Area School District. It's Jan. 2, 1997, the roads are extremely
slippery, over 100 schools have called for a two-hour delay. Not Pittston
Area. They chose to put our children in harm's way. Going to school on
holidays is one thing, but jeopardizing their safety, is unacceptable. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Yes, this morning, Jan. 2, when I picked up my copy of The Times Leader,
your headline states, "Gunfire aimed at killing deal" and what you're talking
about is the shooting that took place over in Israel by an Israeli soldier
against five to nine Palestinians. I don't know why that would make a
headline, because something like that happens over there about every week, in
fact it's been going on in that area from the days of King Herod, and that's
about 2,500 years ago. So the thing that gets me, is that fact that if an Arab
kills a Jewish settler, he's called a terrorist. But the minute a Jew shoots a
Palestinian, he's called deranged. And that this kid that did the shooting
should go see a psychiatrist. Give me a break. In another thing, it shows the
kid there sitting on the street with an M-16, probably made here in America
and supported by American tax dollars. That's all I have to say about that.
Put in on the back page, please. It's old news. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 With this New Year upon us, please let me offer some positive input. Recipe
for making friends. Half a cup of friendship, one cup of thoughtfulness,
creamed together with a generous amount of tenderness. Beat all into a cup of
loyalty. Add, one cup of faith, one cup of hope, one cup of charity. Be sure
to add also a teaspoon of gaiety that sings, and then add the ability to laugh
at little things. Moisten with sudden cheers of heartfelt sympathy. Bake in a
good natured pan and serve repeatedly. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Please don't cancel the Scramblr puzzle. It's such fun to do. If you
published it daily, and chose one day at random for the puzzle to be submitted
for a possible prize, I'm sure many people would enjoy it immensely. I know I
would!. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Today is Jan. 2, and on the front page of The Times Leader is a picture of
a ninth grade student in a school bus, riding all alone, going to school. Who
is paying for all this money to pay these people? I guess it's the taxpayers'
money to take one child in a bus and pay the bus driver, the gas, and then the
teachers at the school are getting paid for no one being there. Using electric
to light the school up, to heat the school. This is ridiculous. Who makes
these decisions? These people that does make these decisions do not deserve to
have a job. They should be locked up somewhere and get some mental treatment. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm tired of picking up the paper and reading about the friends of Sharon. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm calling in reference to the inactive clock on South Main Street. It
should be put back on Public Square where it previously served to show the
time for watchless people waiting for buses. Instead of them having to ask
everybody what time is it? Another thing which might help the downtown and
Boscov's is to repair the toilets in the ladies restrooms. Most of them are
useless, overflow, or are just out of order. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Yes, I'd like you to investigate or maybe do an article. This PG Energy ...
just got 21 percent, now they're going to get an extra 6. I'd like to know
why, and if you could do anything about it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Editor's note: PG Energy's residential gas customers will pay an average
$217 more a year in 1997 as a result of back-to-back rate increases granted to
the utility by the state Public Utility Commission. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The increase breaks down two ways: a 21 percent hike announced Nov. 21 to
cover fuel price increases and a 4.5 percent increase in base rates approved
in December. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Both increases will go into effect Jan. 21, but billing for the 4.5 percent
increase may be deferred without interest until July. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In the base rate increase, the company settled for slightly more than half
the amount it requested. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I just finished reading the Sunday Times Leader (Dec. 29) and I read the
very touching and cute article about the Penn State football star Curtis Enis
and his fiancee Heidi Hanna. I just thought it was kind of comical in your
story where you point out that at first Hanna was reluctant to become involved
with Curtis because he was a jock. Well, wasn't she an all-star (athlete)
herself? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Editor's note: Hanna spoke in the story about being nervous about dating an
athlete but she is indeed a star softball pitcher. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I'm calling in reference to the coal drop. I was very disgusted that
Channel 22 switched from Letterman to that ridiculous pathetic coal drop. Who
ever thought of that idea better get back to the drawing board because it was
the stupidest, stupidest thing I've ever seen. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I as a Catholic am insulted by your caption under a picture celebrating
Kwanzaa on Page 3 of Wednesday's paper. You state that some people decorate
with a Menorah or Santa Claus. As a Catholic, we decorate with baby Jesus
which is the true meaning of Christmas. Please make that clear. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
