Silence invites commissioners to keep on taxing and taking &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I am writing in response to the county commissioners raising our taxes by
25 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; percent. I was present at the meeting on Dec. 17, 1996, and my opinion of
the commissioners is that they were very smug and confident that the tax hike
was needed. They knew that there was no way anyone could challenge their
decisionEach commissioner justified his use of county vehicles. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If the heads of offices absolutely need a vehicle, why do they need
vehicles that cost $16,000-$35,000? A Hyundai costs around $7,000. How often
do their spouses use these vehicles? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Times Leader hit the nail on the head in its editorial: Mark the
vehicles so the taxpayers could see where the vehicles are being taken. Why do
they need $56,000 worth of cellular phone bills? Did Luzerne County hire 50
new employees? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And what about their pay? In 1995 the commissioners income was almost
$27,000; in 1996 their income is about $38,000. That is a heck of a pay raise.
The chairman commissioner made $28,000, and now he makes $39,000. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 One would think that since there is a Republican in the office, he would
challenge any tax hike that Democrats would propose. But I think Mr. Jones is
a Democrat in Republican clothing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But I really do not understand the taxpayer. You continue to vote these
people in. You continue to sit back while these people waste your money. You
do not care that you have to keep paying more to enable these people to enjoy
their perks. Despite all the taxpayer associations, you refuse to attend and
join and help them to fight against the tax raise. And the biggest question is
WHY? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
