We should broaden our vision, definition of `local college' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I applaud your recent editorials and articles describe the value of college
resources in our area. Strong collegiate involvement in the community can
support a healthy economy, bring in numerous cultural events, and enhance our
respect for diversity in backgrounds and outlooks. All of these influences can
make our community a more attractive environment for allYour examples of the
Five-College Area of western Massachusetts and the Lehigh Valley consortium of
colleges accurately portray the value of college linking together and
strengthening the community by building upon the strengths of each. Clearly,
cooperation among college ins an area can bring about substantial advantages
to students and the community. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Unfortunately, your reports and editorials fall short by perpetuating the
split between the Wilkes-Barre and Scranton areas. You refer only to those
college resources in the Wilkes-Barre area and ignore Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Having received my doctorate at one of the "five colleges," the University
of Massachusetts at Amherst, I would like to note that the geographic
separation among those five colleges is greater than the separation among the
colleges in the greater Wilkes-Barre/Scranton areas. Similarly, the travel
distance between the consortium colleges in the Lehigh Valley is at least as
large as what we experience in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 It is good to see the increased cooperation among the colleges in the
Wilkes-Barre area. There are similar benefits that are being achieved from
increased cooperation between Marywood College and the University of Scranton. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Our area will truly come into its own when we can get past the "great wall"
separating the two counties and create greater cooperation among the
impressive college resources available in the greater Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
area. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 With all due respect to the historic reason that led to the "great wall,"
our collective future can only be enhanced by taking a larger view of what
constitutes our "community." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
