Infertility has many causes &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Approximately 10 to 20 percent of couples who want a child have tried to
conceive but have not been successful. Couples are considered infertile if
pregnancy is not achieved after one year of regular sexual intercourse without
the use of birth controlInfertile couples who want a natural child should
consider having a complete infertility evaluation. Infertility might be
temporary and might be due to many different correctable problems -- in the
man, in the woman or in both. Men and women should be tested because in 15 to
20 percent of all couples who are infertile, both parties have problems that
result in infertility. In general, the causes of infertility are evenly
distributed between the sexes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For a couple to conceive, several basic physical conditions must be met. If
there is a problem anywhere, infertility can result: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The man must produce a certain number of normal live sperm that are healthy
and motile -- sperm that are actively moving. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The woman must produce a healthy egg (ovum) and must ovulate (release) the
egg from ovaries into the fallopian tubes. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The woman's tubes must be open so that the egg can find its way into the
uterus. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The sperm pathways must be functional so that sperm can pass from the
testes (where they are produced), to the seminal vesicles (where they are
stored) and out through the penis at the time of ejaculation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The woman's reproductive organs must be prepared to receive sperm and allow
migration from the vagina through the cervix, into the uterus and into the
tubes. These organs must be healthy and able to nourish the sperm in its
passage to the egg. They must also be able to protect and nourish the
fertilized egg as it grows. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 General health problems such as obesity and poor eating habits might add to
problems leading to infertility in both men and women. Factors such as stress,
smoking or alcohol cause or worsen infertility problems. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Through the examination process, the doctor attempts to discover causes of
infertility. A detailed evaluation of the partners is needed. The process
requires both time and a conscious effort. Couples might find it hard not to
become discouraged, but each step of the diagnostic process is designed to
help couples achieve pregnancy. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 When the work-up is completed, the doctor should be able to tell a couple
what can and cannot be done to help them. This gives them a better idea of
their chances of conception. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Usually, diagnosis of infertility begins with a medical history and general
physical exam of the man and the woman. Assessing the couple's general health
is important because there are some conditions not directly related to the
reproductive system that may contribute to infertility. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The doctor investigates any known abnormalities in the reproductive organs
of the man and woman that may have occurred at their birth. These types of
abnormalities are rare but can be causes of infertility. The couple also will
be asked about their sexual relations to find out if their infertility is
related to such factors as timing or frequency of intercourse. Often a couple
may simply need more information on sexual techniques that are most favorable
to conception. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The timing of sexual intercourse, for example, can play an important part
in conception. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Infertility can lead to severe stress and tension in a relationship. This
is particularly true if a couple has learned they have little or no chance of
conceiving a child. It is a time when a couple need to be especially
supportive of each other, and they may need to have professional counseling. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A couple who suspect they are infertile should talk with their doctor about
their concerns. They might wish to have testing done as a first step in
dealing with the problem. Testing might be able to detect the cause and
determine if anything can be done to correct it. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
