Quality of life begins with quality of our daily encounters with others &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I am writing about what happened on Dec. 13 involving my mother, who
resides in Dallas, and a local physicianMy mother woke at 11 p.m. on Dec. 12
with severe pain in her right side. The pain was keen enough to immobilize her
and make her consider calling 911. However, my mother's sense of pride or
stubbornness allowed her only to take some pain medication she had for a
previous ailment, which enabled her to sleep. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She woke around 7 a.m. with the same excruciating pain. She called on the
doctor whom she had visited previously and got his answering service. She did
not leave a message with the answering service even though the pain had become
severe enough to make her cry. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 She called her sister for advice, who promptly made her call the answering
service back and leave a message. At about 7:30 a.m. this doctor called her
back. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 According to my mother's recollection, the following conversation took
place: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "This is Dr -------------- " &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Yes sir. " &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Why are you calling me before office hours? " &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Because I am in a great deal of pain." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "Again, I ask you, why are you calling me before office hours?" &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 At this point, my mother is crying uncontrollably. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "How old are you? " &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "I'll be 55 next week." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 "You can come in this afternoon." (Despite the fact that his office opens
at 8 a.m.) &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I learned of this doctor's unprofessional behavior only recently and was
appalled at his lack of compassion and his inhumane treatment of my mother. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Is this incident indicative of where our society is headed? Do we have no
compassion, no feelings for our fellow man? Indeed, where has the word
"service" gone? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This was but one example of the way people treat each other. Just go
through your local fast-food drive-through or stand in line at your local
discount store or supermarket. Does anyone know how to say "hello" or "thank
you" or "please" anymore? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 How can we possibly teach our children and young people to respect others
when we are setting such bad examples? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wake up, everyone. Remember your manners. We are all living on this Earth
together. I pray it is not too late for all of us to treat each other with
respect. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
