Kosciuszko Ball a formal but festive affair &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 When a party features a portrait of Gen. Tadeusz Kosciuszko, flanked by the
flags of the United States and Poland, chances are you've entered the Wilkes &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; University Polish Room Committee Kosciuszko BallThe Grand Ballroom at Gus
Genetti's was the site for the 47th Anniversary ball, an annual black tie
event, held Saturday, Jan. 4. Among the 170 attending were Stacia Feddock,
Joanna Radzwilla Brown and Mark Brown and Dolores Bennett, who began the
evening mingling with friends during cocktails at 6 p.m. They enjoyed hors
d'ouevres of Italian meatballs, mini-potato pancakes with applesauce and sour
cream for dipping and sweet and sour chicken. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Music was provided by Diane O'Malley, assisted by Mary Watkins, with
beautiful selections played on the harp. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This year's honored guest was Eva Salkiewicz-Munnerlyn, first secretary to
the co-counsel-general, Republic of Poland. Salkiewicz-Munnerlyn has served as
counsel to the Vatican. Ceil and Clement Sawicki, Joe and Jane Acri, and
Lorraine and Leonard Gunsior dined on tropical dream salad, prime rib au jus
and chicken Chesapeake with a Mandarin orange supreme cake for dessert. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The tables were highlighted by pedestal floral arrangements of gold lame
and black ribbon with swirling gold willow branches and dendrobium orchids and
spider poms. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And the portrait of Kosciuszko commemorated the 200th anniversary of his
return to the United States after being pardoned from imprisonment in Russia.
Kosciuszko helped George Washington design defensive battlements at Valley
Forge to fortify the colonial army during the harsh winter of 1777-78. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Following dinner, Ellen and Jerry Mondlak, Mr. and Mrs. Stan Urbanski and
Andrew and Jeri Jecen danced to a variety of polkas, waltzes, obereks and slow
ballads provided by the George Tarasek Orchestra. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Proceeds from the ball benefit scholarship funds for Wilkes University and
the Kosciuszko Foundation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lots of folks were out and about on New Year's Eve. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 This year's celebration marked a first for the city of Wilkes-Barre with
the First Annual Coal Drop on Public Square. Thousands of people hit downtown,
braving frigid tem~peratures to celebrate both on and off the Square. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gus Genetti's hosted a New Year's Eve party. Partygoers enjoyed continuous
entertainment from the New York Times Band and DJ Frankie Carll and enjoyed a
meal of prime rib and lobster. About 200 people filled the Tiffany Ballroom at
the Ramada Hotel, dining and dancing with DJ music from Pete Bell Enterprises
and gazing out the windows waiting and watching the festivities on the Square. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mayor Tom McGroarty and several city officials held camp at the Ramada and
were thrilled by a phone call from the ABC television network trying to
establish a link to hear the crowd's cheers at midnight. There were over 500
people coming and going in the lobby, taking advantage of the coffee and cocoa
station the hotel set up for the frozen revelers. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Following the drop, Keenan's was filled with people topping off the night.
And the hotel sold out all 177 rooms, many booked for the event. Many tried to
get one of the rooms overlooking the Square. Wilkes-Barre businessman Scott
Henry, with his wife Mary Jane and their children, celebrated in a room
overlooking the festivities. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Scott commented that it was great to be downtown for the celebration and a
great effort by the city. Joining in the fun were Marjorie and Eric Marquart
and their children, Dick and Rochelle Smith and Chuck and Louise Lentini, who
had such a great time she looks forward to next year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 If you weren't one of the 4,000 attending the coal drop on Public Square,
maybe you spent your evening at one of our many great area clubs. Irem Temple
Country Club hosted a celebration beginning with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. Hugh
and Arlene Williams, Al and Patsy Ann Luff and Gerald and Dorothy Hoover
enjoyed chicken tortellini soup, Beef Wellington and stuffed shrimp with crab
meat and for dessert, a hot fudge brownie a la mode in a bolla glass. Tunes
for dancing were provided by Starfire. Jimmy and Carol Eason and Lee and Betsy
Hockenberry joined the crowd at midnight for a champagne toast. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Valley Country Club in Hazleton hosted a New Year's Eve event starting
with cocktails and hors d'ouevres at 7 p.m. and John Pachence on piano. Dave
and Mary Lou Glasberg, Lawrence and Marian Klemow and Joe and Gloria Cerullo
enjoyed a clubhouse decorated for the holiday with accents of gold lame. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A meal of seafood strudel and surf &amp; turf was followed by a lavish dessert
and coffee bar. The crowd of 190 rang in the New Year dancing to music by the
RPM Old Stars. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo Ferraro and Mr. and Mrs. Leo Jake were among the crowd
of 120 gathered at Fox Hill Country Club for the evening's festivities.
Members started off with cocktails at 7:30 in the clubhouse, which was
decorated in billowing white swags and twinkle lights accented by poinsettias
and poinsettia trees. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Partygoers enjoyed a meal of Crab Lewis, Pasta Involtine, raddichio salad,
filet mignon and broiled seafood platter topped off with the delectable
tiramisu for dessert. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Potash and Mr. and Mrs. Tino Turco stepped out on the
dance floor with Bill Space and the boys of Midnight Blue and cheered with a
champagne toast at midnight. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The party was in full swing at the Westmoreland Club. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rich Gubiotti and Diane Romanski with Bill and Candy Kennedy, Gerald and
Donna Johns, Chris and Mike Alaimo, Joe and Judy Giambra and Mark and Candice
Miscavage, started the black tie event at 8 p.m. with chilled seafood, caviar,
hot hors d'ouevres, cocktails and champagne. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The club was decorated with shimmering blue twinkle lights and tables were
accented with bubbling champagne bottles and helium filled balloons. Blue and
silver shooting stars crossed the ceiling. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Don and Michelle Fredericks and Ray and Nancy Daring sat down for dinner at
9 p.m., enjoying grilled salmon on seared saffron and truffle polenta, lobster
consomme, tomato and artichoke salad on mixed field greens in a phyllo basket
with feta cheese vinaigrette, roasted tenderloin with grilled jumbo shrimp
with Mikonos crab stuffing and ending with Champagne Dreams for dessert. Ronne
Kurlancheck and Joel Zitofsky, Fred and Diane Lombardo and Betsy and Zahid
Husain were among the 200 enjoying dance tunes into the New Year from both
Which Doctor and Brass and Ivory. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
