 New access to I-81 not likely, says PennDOT &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation probably will not provide the
borough with access to the proposed Exit 46 interchange off Interstate 81At a
work session Monday night, Robert Dusek of Direction Associates Inc. told
council that PennDOT has completed the preliminary design phase of the project
and that access to the borough "will not be within their scope at this time." &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The consultants are waiting for PennDOT's official response, but Dusek
noted that after approximately nine years of planning, it is unlikely that
PennDOT will alter the project to provide access to Laurel Run. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Architect Carl Handman said that when a proposed state project such as Exit
46 intersects with an existing road in a community, PennDOT is required to
connect them. No major roads exist in Laurel Run to connect to I-81. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dusek recommended that council work with PennDOT in planning construction
roads that will run through the borough. These can serve as the beginning of a
road system, he said, which might ultimately be valuable to the borough. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In the past, the borough has discussed industrial development tied to Exit
46. But Dusek said that because Laurel Run will not be connected to the
interstate, another development option might be office complexes. He said
smaller development would be better suited to the terrain. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Dusek said the area also might be suitable for a small ski slope. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The consultants said that much of the flat land in the borough is
developable because of mine fires, but there are some areas that can be used.
Dusek said that the borough's panoramic view of the valley is a great asset,
and might attract a potential developer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
