``Mountain Laurels'' is a regular series of letters from readers conveying
thanks to individuals or groups for their support, help or kindnessGOP's grand
volunteers &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 I thank the excellent volunteers I had the privilege of leading during the
Dole-Kemp 1996 campaign for the presidency. These fine people were totally
dedicated to a cause we deeply believed in. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In number they totaled over 300. They were all local people coming from all
areas of Luzerne County. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Some of the areas they hailed from were Hazleton, Shickshinny, Mocanaqua,
Nanticoke, Northwest Area, Kingston, Forty Fort, Wyoming, West Pittston,
Lake-Lehman School District Area, Pittston, Wilkes-Barre and the Dallas area. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 These volunteers manned the polls answered the phones, wrote articles, and
went door to door. Their ages were from 6 to 90. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 As chairman I helped many students with their assignments. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The students came from most schools and school districts in the county. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All the good that was accomplished by these dedicated people will not be
forgotten and will continue. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Thank you, Carmen Chiumento, for helping me with my husband when I needed
you. He passed away two years ago. Now you and your wife always ask and care
about me now, and I thank you both from the bottom of my heart. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Plains &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Help for fire victims &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 When our house in Sheatown burned recently many people pitched in to help
out. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We'd like to thank each and every one in person, but since this is
impossible, we hope this will suffice. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Many thanks to the Red Cross who found us temporary shelter and helped with
clothing; to Econo Lodge on Rt. 309 for supplying two rooms that were our
shelter; to our employers, Luzerne County Community College and Penn General
Stores, for their support and caring; to Toys for Tots and Valley Santa who
saw to it that our little ones would have a merry Christmas; and to the
Nanticoke schools and Wilkes-Barre Vo-Tech. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The firemen who responded so early in the morning also deserve thanks for
not letting it get any worse than it was. And, last but not least, all the
private citizens who have given clothing, money, gift certificates and advice
to help us through. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 May God have witnessed all your generosities and return them ten times
over. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Howard, Sonja, Michelle, Penney, Nathaniel, and Ivan Sprague and Dawn
Konopski &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Sheatown &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 New Year made special &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 For the second consecutive year I was a guest at the annual Cancer
Survivors holiday party given by the Wyoming Valley Health Care System. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 All those in attendance enjoyed a splendid meal prepared and presented with
love and skill by Donna, Mark, Marlene and Lillian. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Following the buffet we were treated to the sweet sounds of the Bishop
Hoban Seasonal Singers and a barbershop quartet featuring our own Karl
Brecheisen. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Not only were we grateful to be here to celebrate yet another holiday
season, but we can be thankful for such a wonderful observance of this special
time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 My family and I extend our heartfelt thanks to all who assisted with the
Community Fund Drive and Spaghetti Dinner for my wife, Joyce Coolbaugh. We
have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the people in our community. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We cannot begin to express our appreciation for the many thoughts, prayers
and words of encouragement we've received since Joyce's accident. In a moment,
our lives changed forever, but with the help of wonderful people, we know we
can move forward one day at time. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 To everyone who donated time, effort, goods and financial contributions,
many thanks for your generosity. We are grateful for the special effort put
forth by the staff and management of the The Times Leader to make the public
aware of the fund-raising events on Joyce's behalf. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 We truly appreciate the encouragement of our neighbors, colleagues, family
and friends. We are grateful to so many people in our community, many of whom
we've never had the chance to meet, but who showed their willingness to extend
a helping hand in our time of need. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
