Joseph Opiela &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 January 14, 1997 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Joseph A. Opiela Sr. (Joe ``Cheers,'') 67, of Highland Park, N.J., died &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tuesday at the JFK Medical Center, Edison, N.JBorn in Dupont, he resided
there before moving to Highland Park 45 years ago. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He served with the U.S. Army at Fort Knox as a Technical Sergeant First
Class and was honorably discharged in 1948. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He worked as a permacel for a short time before opening Highland Park
Chevron service station, operating the business for more than 20 years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He also owned and operated Opie's Tavern, Alpha, N.J., and the Highland
Inn, Highland Park, at various times. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Later in his career, he worked as a bartender at Cheers, Perth Amboy, N.J.,
and the Park Tavern, Highland Park. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He was co-founder of the Highland Park Athletic Club, sponsored several
youth league baseball and softball teams in Highland Park, and promoted Pop
Warner football by sponsoring Monday night bingo and other activities. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He was a member of American Legion Father and Son Post 435, Edison, N.J.,
where he served on the executive board for many years. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He was a communicant of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Highland Park. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He was preceded in death by his son, Stanley, in 1995; wife, Mary, in 1990;
parents. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Surviving are children, Joseph Jr., Natick, Mass.; Anne Marie Dwyer,
Edison, N.J.; Patricia Zduniak, Brick Township, N.J.; four grandchildren; a
sister, Dolores Charney, West Wyoming; a brother, John, Wilkes-Barre. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday from the Rusciano Funeral
Home, 75 Woodbridge Ave., Highland Park, N.J., with a Mass of Christian Burial
at 9:30 a.m. in St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Highland Park. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, New Brunswick, N.J. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
